Theft of 840K coins sends NY meter-man to prison

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) ? A former Buffalo, N.Y., parking meter mechanic has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for stealing thousands of dollars in quarters while on the job.

Prosecutors say it was James Bagarozzo's idea to rig meters to get at the coins. He stole $210,000 over more than eight years, grabbing fistfuls of coins, storing them in a bag in his truck and then rolling and cashing them in at banks.

Bagarozzo apologized during a brief statement. He blamed a gambling addiction and an illness he believed would kill him.

Bagarozzo pleaded guilty to theft in September, along with a former co-worker, Lawrence Charles. Charles admitted stealing $15,000 in quarters over about five years. He's expected to get six months to a year in prison at his Aug. 29 sentencing.

Hagel, Chinese Defense Minister to Meet at Pentagon

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16, 2013 ? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and his top advisers will meet with China?s Minister of National Defense Gen. Chang Wanquan at the Pentagon Aug. 19, Defense Department spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren told reporters today.

The two defense leaders will have an opportunity to discuss a variety of issues, a senior defense official said, including the U.S.-China relationship and the military-to-military relationship, bilateral issues, regional issues and functional issues like cyber.

After the talks, the official said he expects Hagel and Chang to hold a press conference. He also said that Hagel has been invited to visit China but the visit has not yet been scheduled.

Warren said Chang is meeting today in Hawaii with Navy Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, commander of U.S. Pacific Command. This weekend, Army Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., who commands the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, both headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the general and his delegation.

The senior defense official said Chang?s interest in Northcom may have to do with the unique role it plays in issues like disaster relief and the civil-military partnership ?as part of the discussion we?ve had with the [Chinese People?s Liberation Army] in recent years.?

The U.S. military has also been considering ways to expand cooperation with China?s military in areas like humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

The senior Chinese official?s upcoming visit to the Pentagon illustrates and will help to sustain the positive momentum that?s been achieved in the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship over the past 18 months, the senior defense official said.

It began, he added, when Xi Jingpin -- now China?s president -- visited the United States as China?s vice president as the guest of then-Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta in January 2012.

?That set in motion a series of positive and sustained engagements between the two militaries that continues today,? the senior defense official said.

Last September, Panetta hosted former Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Liang Guanglie, and then Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited China in April, the official said.

Hagel?s Aug. 19 meeting with Chang won?t be his first interaction with the Chinese leader, the official said.

?They spoke via the defense telephone link back in April,? the senior defense official said, ?so the visit that?s going on now sustains the regular set of interactions between the two leaders that reflects the positive nature of the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship.?

The United States, he added, ?is looking for ways to sustain substantive dialog on a range of issues between our two militaries where we can expand opportunities for practical cooperation and at the same time expand and enhance mechanisms for managing our differences in a responsible way. The defense telephone is an example of that.?

If the pace of military-to-military cooperation appears to have accelerated recently, that may be due to influence from President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jingpin, the official said.

?It does appear that this is an effort that is top-down,? he said. ?So, for example, when the two presidents met at Sunnylands [in California in June], they talked about the importance of the military-to-military relationship.

?Indeed,? the defense official continued, ?they had a consensus on the value of a sustained, substantive military-to-military relationship as a central part of a stable and constructive bilateral relationship. So ? it starts at the top.?

(Aurora) - Today, Mayor Tom Weisner welcomed Carlos Jimenez Macias, the new Consul General of Mexico, to Aurora. Joined by members of the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, they discussed their shared commitment to building stronger connections between Aurora and the Mexican Consulate, and the need for expanded educational opportunities for youth.

?Our history is one where immigrants were integral in building and shaping the City of Aurora. I am proud that Aurora is home to immigrants of many countries and their descendants. Aurora?s Mexican population has been rooted in Aurora for almost a century and has become a staple part of our diverse community. I look forward to working with the Consul General to forge new collaborations for our community,? said Mayor Weisner.

What Meat to Use for Chinese BBQ Pork

Chinese BBQ pork is one of the tastiest and most succulent dishes on Chinese menus and is easy to make at home. It's traditionally made with the fattier cuts of pork and roasted very slowly so the fat, spices and flavorings melt through the lean part of the meat. Because it's the star of the meal, Chinese BBQ pork is customarily served with steamed, white jasmine rice and a simple cucumber salad dressed with a little rice vinegar.

1. • By far, the most common cut used for Chinese BBQ pork is pork belly. It is a large, rectangular cut that is boned before roasting. The tough skin has to be heavily scored so it won't shrink during roasting and to allow the seasonings to penetrate the substantial layer of fat below the skin. Pork belly produces a moist, melt-in-your-mouth meat with a slightly crispy outer layer when roasted uncovered for several hours in an oven set to 300 degree Fahrenheit. Turn pork belly several times during roasting.

   • Also known as pork butt or Boston butt, the shoulder blade is usually removed before roasting to facilitate carving. Pork shoulder is frequently cut into large, meaty, boneless portions and marketed as country style ribs which you can also use for Chinese BBQ pork. Since it's cut near the head of the pig, it has a sweeter flavor than pork belly and an ample amount of fat to keep it moist. Like pork belly, it should be generously scored before roasting.

• Although considerably less fatty than the other Chinese BBQ cuts, loin and tenderloin can be used if you cook them slowly and add chunks of slab bacon or fatback to the pan. Fatback is a hard, fat cut from the back of the pig and used to make lard, cracklings and sausage. Pork tenderloin is particularly good for stir-fry "roast pork" which is thinly sliced and quickly sauteed in a wok or deep skillet with the same spices used to slow-roast fattier cuts.

• Refrigerate the pork uncovered to help the skin dry out and become crispy during roasting. Season it well with fresh garlic and ginger, hoisin sauce, five-spice powder, salt and pepper. For extra flavor, rub the mixture into the pork and let it marinate for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator. Bring the pork to room temperature before putting it into the oven to ensure even cooking. Cook it for 20 minutes at the highest temperature your oven allows. Reduce the heat to 300 degrees F and roast uncovered for about 30 minutes per pound. Turn the roast often and add water to the pan to keep it moist, as needed.

Hi first time buyer,

I will answer the questions first and then give my 2 cents worth...
1. A reasonable fee is going to be 2.5%, rather than 3%, since less time was involved.? However, what you are really paying a Realtor for is their expertise in negotiating a purchase price, getting through inspections, negotiating any findings from the inspections, navigating/understanding all the seller disclosures, explaining all of the contracts which average over 25 pages now, providing you with a market analysis, presenting you with options all along the way, representing your interests, tapping into their experience and more!? It is extremely rare for a Realtor to "find you a home", as more often than not, the home that is purchased is listed on a public site such as the Multiple Listing Service.? Therefore, the Buyer (you) should be playing an active role in picking out properties as this will be one of the largest investments made in a lifetime.? An agent can help you with this and provide you listings, but you are still responsible for seeking out, viewing, and ultimately making the decision to put in an offer.?
2.) You do not need a Realtor (Buyer's agent).? It is a service and fees are only paid upon a successful close of escrow.? A lawyer can certainly do the paperwork for you, but they typically won't handle any negotiations, inspections, further negotiations or provide a market analysis to know whether or not you are making a good decision in the purchase.?

2 cents: If you already have everything negotiated, you are comfortable with the process and all of the required disclosures, then you may be better served by a lawyer.? As a first time buyer, there is a lot to learn.? One thing an agent would be able to explain, is that normally as a buyer, you are actually responsible for paying both the buyer and seller agents fees within the purchase price.? Where you could save yourself a lot of money is by enlisting a knowledgeable agent who could show you what market value is and who then negotiates at least the seller side fee off of the price.? I don't believe that there are lawyers who would be able to do this and as previous writers mentioned, lawyers get paid no matter what.? They have no vested interest in seeing the process through as an agent might.? Not to mention that if the deal doesn't work out and you're using an agent, you then would then have a trusted Realtor to work with to find you the right home at the right price!

A few days ago, the mission commander was interviewed Astrobiology Magazine, noting the most successful foods "There's also been a lot of really good cooked dishes. Some of our crew members are accomplished cooks, and every week there are different surprises. Some success meals were Russian borscht, Moroccan tagine, enchilasagna, seafood chowder, and fabada asturiana. Wraps work really well: we combine tortillas, different vegetables, Velveeta cheese, and sausage or canned fish into ever-changing combinations. This is actually in line with the success of tortillas at the ISS. In general, the dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables are a real success. They're used on a daily basis in almost every meal." The crew kept weblogs, and did other things than just sit around and eat: some studied robotics and they went on a few simulated EVAs.
