Italy migrant death toll rises to 275

LAMPEDUSA, Italy (AP) ? Italian divers on Tuesday recovered the bodies of more migrants from the wreck of a smugglers' ship that sank off the tiny island of Lampedusa, raising the death toll to 275.

Coast Guard Commander Filippo Marini said 43 bodies were recovered from within the ship's hold, while one was spotted by a helicopter floating near the wreck, before the operation was suspended for darkness.

Just 155 migrants, most if not all from Eritrea, survived Thursday's shipwreck. Survivors said there were some 500 would-be asylum seekers aboard when the ship capsized and sank in sight of land.

A disproportionate number of the dead are women: So far the bodies of 81 women have been recovered, while only six of the survivors were female. Eight of the dead are children.

"Inside, we're finding more women than men," Gianni Dessi, the coast guard official coordinating the diving operation, told Sky TG24. "We hope not, but we expect to find more children."

He said the scene inside the ship's hold is tough for divers, but that "maintaining cold blood is a quality that helps the operation."

The survivors were helping with the identification of the bodies, mostly through photographs. In some cases, divers also have recovered documents.

Thursday's shipwreck has one of the highest verified death tolls among migrant ship disasters in the Mediterranean Sea. Humanitarian organizations have had reports of large numbers of migrants being lost at sea, including one boat with 300 that disappeared in 2011, but the bodies in such cases are never recovered.

Also Tuesday, prosecutors in Agrigento, Sicily, said they had detained a 35-year-old Tunisian man who is believed to have been the captain of the ship. The suspect faces charges of aiding illegal immigration and multiple counts of homicide.

Tens of thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East try to cross the Mediterranean Sea each year, seeking a better life in Europe. Hundreds die in the process.

U.S. Fed ships new $100 bills with anti-counterfeit features

By Ian Simpson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve began supplying banks on Tuesday with billions of redesigned $100 bills that incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting features, the U.S. central bank said.

The notes, which retain the image of American statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin, include two new security features - a blue three-dimensional security ribbon with images of bells and 100s, and a color-changing bell in an inkwell, the Fed said in a statement.

The $100 bills, the biggest U.S. denomination known in American slang as "Benjamins," also keep security features from the previous design, such as a watermark.

"The new design incorporates security features that make it easier to authenticate, but harder to replicate," said Federal Reserve Board Governor Jerome Powell said in a statement.

U.S. officials have said the $100 note is the most frequently counterfeited denomination of U.S. currency outside the United States due to its broad circulation overseas. In the United States, the $20 bill is the most frequently counterfeited note.

Sonja Danburg, program manager for U.S. currency education at the Fed, said about 3.5 billion new $100 bills had been stockpiled. There are about $900 billion in $100 notes in circulation, with half to two-thirds outside the United States, she said.

The United States has about $1.15 trillion in genuine currency in circulation, and less than 1/100th of 1 percent of that value is counterfeit, Danburg said.

Benjamins are the highest-denominated notes issued by the Federal Reserve since the United States stopped issuing $500, $1,000 and $10,000 notes in 1969.

The new bills have been in development since 2003. The new bills cost about 12.5 cents each to make, 5 cents more than the previous notes because of the greater complexity of the design, Danburg said.

The average $100 bill lasts about 15 years before wearing out and being pulled from circulation. The more frequently handled $1 note lasts about six years, Danburg said.

The Fed said people with old bills did not need to trade them in for new ones since all designs of U.S. currency remained legal tender.

Oklahoma Senator Inhofe recovering at home after heart surgery

By Karen Brooks

(Reuters) - Senator James Inhofe was recovering at home in Tulsa on Tuesday from emergency quadruple bypass heart surgery, but expects to return to Washington "soon and even stronger to continue the fight," according to a statement from the Oklahoma Republican.

Inhofe, 78, had the surgery in a Tulsa hospital on Friday after doctors found a blockage during a routine visit, he said. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the senator said.

"The discovery shocked me as I had no visible symptoms that something was wrong," said Inhofe. "Today, I am feeling great and am fully engaged with my work here in Oklahoma."

The senator has not been given a date when he can expect to return to Washington, said spokeswoman Donelle Harder.

"They told us it would be just a few weeks," Harder said.

Inhofe, one of the most conservative U.S. senators, said his absence may cause him to "miss some upcoming votes" in the battle over funding the government, increasing the debt ceiling and funding President Barack Obama's health reform law, which has forced a partial shutdown of the federal government.

He urged colleagues on Capitol Hill to "work with vigilance to reopen the government with a bill that represents Oklahomans and all of Americans."

"My doctors agree I will return soon and even stronger to continue the fight to protect Oklahomans' freedoms," he said.

Sexist ?KFC? Hillary Clinton buttons at GOP event

Campaign buttons comparing to Hillary Clinton to a ?KFC special? surfaced over the weekend at a?GOP event in California.

An unidentified vendor displayed the sexist flare reading ?KFC Hillary Special: 2 fat thighs, 2 small breasts? left wing? at Saturday?s Republican Party Convention in Anaheim.

A reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle spotted the buttons available for purchase near the VIP reception area and tweeted out a photo during the annual meeting.

State party officials thanked reporter Carla Marinucci?for ?bringing the matter to our attention,? in an emailed statement to MSNBC.

?The first time CRP leadership and staff became aware of these buttons was as a result of Chronicle reporter Carla Marinucci?s tweet,? said Mark Standriff,?Director of Communications for the?California Republican Party. ?After identifying the vendor who was displaying the buttons, CRP staff had them removed. For your additional information, the vendor had brought only 5 of the buttons to convention, none of which had been sold.?

While Clinton?s 2016 ambitions remain unknown at this time, a new Quinnipiac University poll shows she?s dominating the early horse races across the board.

The former secretary state leads potential star Republican candidates in hypothetical mash-ups: Clinton tops New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, 49%-36%, she beats Kentucky Sen,?Rand Paul, 53%-36%,?and shuts down a Ted Cruz candidacy,?54%-31%.
