A terrier who survived the tornado waits it out with help from the Joplin Humane Society and the ASPCA.

JOPLIN, MO ? A chocolate lab who washed into a storm drain lost all her toenails desperately trying to claw out from the rising water. Another dog is wandering the streets with deep lacerations from flying glass still embedded in her side. These are just two pets whose post-tornado circumstances have changed for the better this week, thanks to well-organized animal rescue organizations mobilized in Joplin.
Approximately 600 pets?have been rescued following the tornado that devastated the Missouri town, which is said to be the biggest in the nation?s history.
With the help of the Joplin Humane Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), more than 120 people have reunited with their four-legged family members.
Still, a larger percentage of pets remain unclaimed. But?as word gets out that many animals survived the twister, more people are showing up for joyful reunions with their pets.
Lost pets are being brought to the Humane Society by the organization?s volunteers and citizens who are helping out.?Rescued animals wait for their families in one of three donated warehouses, where they are given vaccines, medical attention, food and a secure place to sleep.
?If the guardians who are reunited can take them, they do. If they can?t, we?ll take care of them until they can,??said Karen Aquino, head of the Joplin Humane Society.
?Very few families are choosing to relinquish their pets,? Aquino told Global Animal. ?They are sometimes all they have left.?
The ASPCA showed up in force in Joplin following the disaster to aid in rescue, feeding and medical care of animals victimized by the tornado. ?The organization has committed to staying at least a month. The ASPCA is looking at implementing a 14-day window for people to identify their pets before moving to the adoption process; they are also considering reaching out to local foster networks to help house rescued pets.
This week, Global Animal Foundation gave $2,500 to the Joplin Humane Society on behalf of readers who donated to animal rescue in the Deep South.?The Humane Society?s Karen Aquino said the donations from Global Animal readers will be allocated to medical supplies, vaccines, and free veterinarian care for Joplin?s lost and injured pets.

Science magazine reports that Enzo Boschi, the president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, and his fellow seismologists have been charged with manslaughter after they allegedly didn't alert the residents of L'Aquila in Central Italy before a quake hit that town and killed 308 residents.

However, in this case, it seems that these seven, all of whom sit on Italy's major risks committee, reportedly offered certain words of reassurance that caused some residents of L'Aquila not to abandon their homes, but to stay in an area that had previously experienced some smaller quakes.
Judge Giuseppe Romano Gargarella reportedly offered that the seven had held a televised press conference six days before the quake and offered "imprecise, incomplete, and contradictory information."

The dinner experience at Masseto was great. ?However - it was a business dinner and in between the first course and my main course, I had to step out of the restaurant and take a call. ?So when I got back from the call - my dish had to be re-heated. ?The dish was good - but I think the re-heating reduced the crispiness of the pork belly.
So I thought it would be good to check the restaurant out again in a much relaxed setting. ?Fresh from the great brunch experience from Singapore, ?I thought I would check it out again for brunch on Saturdays.
In my previous blog post, I raved about the service personnel of the restaurant. ?They were attentive and they know their menu well. ?This time however - there were two waiters that seem to be the opening staff. ?I think one of them needed some training. ?When asked about a detail in the menu - she didn't know and she had to go back to the kitchen to ask the Chef. ?Thank God that at middle of our meal - the other waiters came - and they were as good as I remembered them during our dinner.
Dining in Masseto it turns out becomes a magnificent experience when you relax and enjoy your meal as if it was your last. ?I think that during brunch - I experienced food Nirvana. ?From the starters ( which was Portobello mushroom on top of Filo pastry ) to the main course ( Bacon, and Egg on top of Toasts ) to the dessert ( Masseto Sundae ) - it was as if I was going through a great symphony of flavors. ?My taste buds were experiencing orgasm - with every bite. ?The scent of the food and drinks ( especially their home made iced tea ) also awakens my olfactory nerves like they have never been before.
So as I went through each dish - and drink - I took time and relished each flavor. ? So citizens of Manila - I must proclaim that Masseto is definitely the best restaurant in the city. ? You just need to try it to discover what I have experienced. ??
For now - I will try to reminisce and recall - the overall experience and hope that I am able to return to food Nirvana.

When the career-focused social networking LinkedIn sold shares to the public and managed to more than double its share price and reach a market value of nearly $9 billion last week, many people thought: bubble.
The last time the market showed that kind of enthusiasm for a company with relatively small profits was more than a decade ago. Back in early 2000, the Nasdaq Composite Index was climbing toward 5,000. Investors poured big money into almost any new business plan with a dot-com in its name, and startups spent millions of dollars buying ad time during the Super Bowl. Remember Pets.com's sock puppet?
The heyday ended abruptly in March 2000. Investors pulled their money and retrenched. The focus returned, once again, to profits. And everyone learned their lesson. Or did they?
"We have a lot of echoes of 1999," says Lee Simmons, an industry specialist at Hoover's, a company that tracks IPOs. Simmons isn't ready to declare a bubble, but he also thinks that LinkedIn's profits of $15.4 million last year don't make it worth $9 billion. Also, the company faces risks ? most notably that its average user doesn't visit the site very often.
On the other hand, Simmons says the company's been around eight years, it is profitable and ? regardless ? some people just love bubbles.
"Bubbles are fun, you know?" he says. "They're round, they don't hurt when you run into them, at least initially, and they get bigger and bigger."
Venture capitalists are among those willing to fan the hot air ? especially when it comes to social networking, Simmons says. Speculation is that Facebook, Groupon and Twitter are all considering their own public offerings. It's the first opportunity in a long time ? about a decade ? that early tech investors have a chance to sell the idea that technology is transforming society, and that it can make serious money.

"I guarantee you there is not a single VC backer in this country who isn't thinking about going to market as quickly as possible," Simmons says. "These guys want to start making money again."
Michael Aronson is a venture capitalist who is, indeed, excited about making money again.
Aronson got his chance to sell late last year. Diapers.com, which his firm funded, sold to Amazon for $545 million. He was pleased with that sum until he saw LinkedIn's showing last week.
"Diapers.com was on the path to IPO," Aronson says. "And right now I wish they'd stayed on that path because the valuation would have been significantly higher."
Aronson, who taught at Wharton School of Business during the last tech boom, says there are significant differences between then and now.
Now, companies can do much more without having tons of capital. Web access, computers, servers and other basic infrastructure is much cheaper. Also, startups aren't throwing money at Super Bowl ads like they used to.
Plus, companies such as LinkedIn have been around a few years ? long enough to have a proven track record and some profits.
"The companies going public now are fairly large companies, with real users, real customers, real revenues, multiple revenue sources," Aronson says.
Anyway, Aronson says, it's wrong to think that just because some of those businesses didn't work in the 1990s, they won't work now. Back then, many people accessed the Web through clunky dialup connections. Phones didn't come with high-speed data plans, so online shopping wasn't what it is now.
It's funny, Aronson says, just the other day he reviewed a couple of business plans proposing to sell, of all things, pet food online.

As far as over-indulging and staying away from fatty foods, Olivia shared, ?I don?t want to restrict myself too much, but I love french fries. I will only let myself have that very occasionally.?

Administration jobs are amongst the most common around, with millions of people all over the UK working in admin positions. From schools to large companies, administrators are in constant demand to meet the day-to-day needs of business, from processing applications and orders to managing office facilities and much more. As well as these crucial tasks, administration can be an excellent first step on the career ladder in a large company and is an excellent stepping stone into a more specialised position. Because administrators often work in close proximity to department managers and heads, it can be a good place to have your skills and hard work noticed.
Unfortunately, it has not all been good news for those in administrative positions in recent years. The economic downturn of the last three years has meant that many graduate opportunities have dried up, leaving a large quantity of university graduates and degree holders out of work with few places confirmed. This has meant greatly increased competition for general entry level jobs, particularly in admin. While many school leavers still stand a great chance of getting these positions, the increased demand for jobs in this sector has had the unfortunate effect of pushing down salaries, meaning that those on the bottom rung of the ladder will likely be paid less than they would have three or four years ago.
Typical salary expectations for an entry level administration job can vary considerably depending on experience and location. Those living in London can expect to be paid more but may well be worse off after the increased cost of living in the capital is taken into account. Those in temporary positions can expect to get only a little over the national minimum wage, recently increased to ?6.08 per hour. Over the course of a full year, this equates to around ?12,000 per year. Those in permanent roles can expect to be paid ?13,000-14,000 per year. Those lucky enough to find their way into more specialised roles or who advance quickly can expect to receive salaries around ?15,000-17,000 per annum.
It is worth noting that, depending on where you work and exactly what you do, it is often possible to advance quickly in admin jobs, helping you reach higher salary grades more quickly after your initial employment period. Mid-level admin positions are usually in the ?18,000-?22,000 bracket, with some reaching as high as ?25,000. Those working in more specialised roles, like those performing tasks in a foreign language, or in charge of the work of others, can anticipate being paid more to reflect the increased responsibility of their positions.

Properties like these are selling like hotcakes ? and, as you can imagine, only a limited amount is available in Singapore. Families are the number one market for such properties, as they are often located near good schools and other amenities. Because of the limited availability of Singapore landed homes, the values of these properties tend go up up quickly as they are snatched up.
REITs
Perhaps you want to invest in properties, but don?t want the responsibilities of a landlord? A Real Estate Investment Trust or REIT may be the best solution for you. Basically, a company would buy several investment properties, (which can also cover commercial properties) and put the together as an investment vehicle people can buy into ? like a stock where shareholders can own a piece of the company (in this case ? the properties listed in the REIT). In Singapore, they are called S-REITs and there are now 20 of them available on the SGX. The profits from investing in REITs come from the rental income, which are distributed to the shareholders.
Investing in Real Estate is not relegated to just the rich these days -any ordinary person with extra income can put their money in real estate. The Singapore market is hot these days, and one of the few unaffected by worldwide financial crisis, which is something to think about if you?re looking to park your money somewhere safe and where it can work hard for you.

My road to motherhood has been a bumpy one with lots of twists and turns and obstacles to throw me off-balance. My entry into motherhood was not without its problems with my eldest son being born two weeks after my 17th birthday.
It?s only now, as the mother of teenagers, that I can truly appreciate the stress that I caused my parents, and that it?s true that things come back to bite you on the butt.
My mum was horrified, but quietly excited about becoming a grandmother. My father was absolutely devastated and disappointed beyond belief. His response was to ground me for the first four months of my pregnancy and prevent me from leaving the house. A bit like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.
Despite all the drama, I loved becoming a mother and my little guy was my world. Was it difficult being a young mother? Definitely, in terms of other people?s reactions and opinions, but I don?t think age or circumstances determine a good or a bad mother.
My first son?s father and I went our separate ways when my son was 3 years old, not an ideal situation, but we at least had the benefit of remaining friends. I met my husband when my son was five years old. We were married one year, one month and one day from the day we met, and our first son together was born eight weeks after we were married. Despite everyone?s opinions about our short time together, our son was planned and eagerly anticipated. (Hubby and I have been together eighteen years this year, so we?ve proved everyone wrong who doubted our relationship.)
My first pregnancy was unplanned and relatively uncomplicated, so it?s fair to say that the second one was planned and a nightmare. I envy the people who glow during pregnancy and have endless reserves of energy, because I don?t.
My second pregnancy also included an ex-wife and a stepson to complicate matters. Hubby and his ex-wife had been separated for over a year when I met him, but as is the case when a new partner comes into the picture, emotions run high.
The first few months of my second pregnancy were spent in and out of the family courts supporting my partner, who was fighting his ex-wife for visitation rights to his toddler son. His son?s serious medical problems meant the ex wanted my partner to have supervised access visits with his son, supervised by the grandmother (husband?s mother). Sadly, it was more out of spite than any real concern.
Luckily, we got a judge who was sympathetic to our dilemma and determined I could be the person to oversee the visits, reasoning that I was a mother also. It was only when my stepson was admitted to hospital and I spent equal amounts of time by his bedside to give his mother a break that things changed with her, and we all managed to come to a workable understanding.
At ten days old my second son was admitted to hospital with pyloric stenosis, which is when the valve from the stomach to the bowel doesn?t open properly. Basically, what can?t get out has to go somewhere so it comes back up at a hundred miles an hour. So the first two weeks of his life I was subjected to projectile vomiting, which meant a new change of clothes for him and for me for every feed. It took me three visits to doctors before they admitted my concerns were real and not just the anxiety of a new mother.
Surgery was required, and the problem was resolved relatively easy although my nerves and stress levels were another problem entirely. We then had a bout of chicken pox go through all of our boys, my oldest son first; stepson next and then the newborn got it at 10 weeks old. Nothing was easy about being a mother the second time round.
I found out I was pregnant again when my second son was 7 months old, this was to be the worst one yet with me being rushed to hospital at 8 weeks pregnant to discover it was an ectopic pregnancy. Emergency surgery in the middle of the night and then the discovery that I was sensitive to morphine led to some serious problems and resulted in several months of post traumatic stress following the surgery due to a belief at the time that I was going to die.
It took months of counselling and a marvellous doctor to get my head back together (which is another story entirely). I started part-time work when my second son was two with an aim of regaining some of my confidence and well-being. I fell pregnant the first week of my new job. It?s true what they say about stress contributing to problems to conceive, because although we had been trying again, it hadn?t been happening. Strangely enough, once I relaxed, it happened.
My third son was born with no problems, no drama and a trouble-free pregnancy ? mind you, I still didn?t glow or have unlimited energy 
Following the birth of our second son together, hubby made the decision that our four boys were more than enough. So, our family is full with his, mine and ours.
This story will come full circle in less than eight weeks when my oldest son becomes a dad. Let me tell you that the road to ?nanahood? hasn?t been exactly smooth either, but I?ll leave that for another post.
So, while the road to motherhood is never an easy one and some of us have more challenges than others, it?s true that every moment is worth the journey.
