Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption Names America's 100 Best ...

DUBLIN, OH ?/PRNewswire/ ~~ Today, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption announced the fifth annual 100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces list recognizing organizations nationwide for their adoption benefits. The Wendy?s Company is No. 1 on this year?s list, with a combination of up to $24,300 in adoption assistance and up to six weeks of paid adoption leave.

?This is one of the highest honors our company can receive,? said David Karam, president, North America, of The Wendy?s Company. ?Dave Thomas was passionate for the cause of adoption, and he personally contacted hundreds of companies asking them to extend adoption benefits to employees. Wendy?s employee Brenda Overturf has used the adoption benefit twice. Overturf and her husband adopted two children from U.S. foster care eight years ago, when the siblings were 9 and 10 years old. This year, they fell in love with three more siblings waiting in foster care, and will finalize their adoptions in a few months.

?Our children always wanted more brothers and sisters, and my husband and I were moved to help older children who might age out of foster care and be left on their own,? Rankings for the Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List are determined by an analysis of a company?s adoption benefits available to employees who adopt, such as financial reimbursement and paid leave. The Foundation compiled the results from its annual survey of U.S. employers and partnered with Employee Benefit News, a SourceMedia publication that is the leading source of information for benefits decision makers, to announce the winners.

The caliber of benefits offered by employers has changed dramatically since the Foundation began announcing the list five years ago. In 2007, an employer offering up to $10,000 and two weeks of paid leave for adoption was ranked in the nation?s top 10. Today, that employer would be tied for 34th place. Five years ago, an employer offering up to $5,000 and six weeks of paid leave for adoption made the top half of the list at number 49. Today, that employer would just make the cut-off for the top 100.

The average financial reimbursement for all Foundation survey participants is $5,000 and the average paid leave offering is six weeks. Nearly half of the participants also offer unpaid leave beyond that required by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), ranging from one week to one year.

There are more than 107,000 children in U.S. foster care waiting to be adopted. Every year, nearly 28,000 children in foster care turn 18 and leave the system without families to call their own. The release of the fifth annual Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List helps the Foundation increase foster care adoption awareness while celebrating those businesses that support adoptive families.

?Whether the child is a 12-year-old victim of child abuse and neglect who has spent years in U.S. foster care, a toddler who has been living in a foreign orphanage, or a newborn from a domestic adoption, it is critical for every child to have the opportunity to adjust and thrive in his or her adoptive home,? said Rita Soronen, president and CEO of the Foundation. ?This is why employer support of adoption and family-friendly work environments are so crucial.?

It's been long known that asbestos spells trouble for human cells. Scientists have seen cells stabbed with spiky, long asbestos fibers, and the image is gory: Part of the fiber is protruding from the cell, like a quivering arrow that's found its mark.

But scientists had been unable to understand why cells would be interested in asbestos fibers and other materials at the nanoscale that are too long to be fully ingested. Now a group of researchers at Brown University explains what happens. Through molecular simulations and experiments, the team reports in Nature Nanotechnology that certain nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes, enter cells tip-first and almost always at a 90-degree angle. The orientation ends up fooling the cell; by taking in the rounded tip first, the cell mistakes the particle for a sphere, rather than a long cylinder. By the time the cell realizes the material is too long to be fully ingested, it's too late.

"It's as if we would eat a lollipop that's longer than us," said Huajian Gao, professor of engineering at Brown and the paper's corresponding author. "It would get stuck."

The research is important because nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes have promise in medicine, such as acting as vehicles to transport drugs to specific cells or to specific locations in the human body. If scientists can fully understand how nanomaterials interact with cells, then they can conceivably design products that help cells rather than harm them.

"If we can fully understand (nanomaterial-cell dynamics), we can make other tubes that can control how cells interact with nanomaterials and not be toxic," Gao said. "We ultimately want to stop the attraction between the nanotip and the cell."

Like asbestos fibers, commercially available carbon nanotubes and gold nanowires have rounded tips that often range from 10 to 100 nanometers in diameter. Size is important here; the diameter fits well within the cell's parameters for what it can handle. Brushing up against the nanotube, special proteins called receptors on the cell spring into action, clustering and bending the membrane wall to wrap the cell around the nanotube tip in a sequence that the authors call "tip recognition." As this occurs, the nanotube is tipped to a 90-degree angle, which reduces the amount of energy needed for the cell to engulf the particle.

Once the engulfing ? endocytosis ? begins, there is no turning back. Within minutes, the cell senses it can't fully engulf the nanostructure and essentially dials 911. "At this stage, it's too late," Gao said. "It's in trouble and calls for help, triggering an immune response that can cause repeated inflammation."

The team hypothesized the interaction using coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulations and capped multiwalled carbon nanotubes. In experiments involving nanotubes and gold nanowires and mouse liver cells and human mesothelial cells, the nanomaterials entered the cells tip-first and at a 90-degree angle about 90 percent of the time, the researchers report.

"We thought the tube was going to lie on the cell membrane to obtain more binding sites. However, our simulations revealed the tube steadily rotating to a high-entry degree, with its tip being fully wrapped," said Xinghua Shi, first author on the paper who earned his doctorate at Brown and is at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. "It is counter-intuitive and is mainly due to the bending energy release as the membrane is wrapping the tube."

The team would like to study whether nanotubes without rounded tips ? or less rigid nanomaterials such as nanoribbons ? pose the same dilemma for cells.

"Interestingly, if the rounded tip of a carbon nanotube is cut off (meaning the tube is open and hollow), the tube lies on the cell membrane, instead of entering the cell at a high-degree-angle," Shi said.

However, the problem does not end there. He was still arrested four more times from 1983 to 1984 for another criminal act he allegedly committed. After finding out that it was not him, he was released and the issue was finally resolved.

Amnesty: Libyan rebels may be guilty of war crimes (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Rebels fighting to topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi committed unlawful killings and torture, Amnesty International said in a report released on Tuesday.

The 100-plus page report, based on three months of investigation in Libya, draws no equivalency between the crimes of Gadhafi loyalists and those of the former rebels, who now hold power in Tripoli: The Gadhafi forces' crimes were greater, the list of them is longer, and they may have amounted to crimes against humanity, the report said.

But it said the crimes of the rebels were not insignificant.

"Members and supporters of the opposition, loosely structured under the leadership of the National Transitional Council (NTC) ... have also committed human rights abuses, in some cases amounting to war crimes, albeit on a smaller scale," the Amnesty report said.

It said opposition supporters "unlawfully killed" more than a dozen Gadhafi loyalists and security officials between April and early July. And just after the rebels took control of eastern Libya, the report said, angry groups of rebel supporters "shot, hanged and otherwise killed through lynching" dozens of captured soldiers and suspected mercenaries, with impunity.

Mohammed al-Alagi, justice minister for Libya's transitional authorities, said that describing the rebels' actions as war crimes is wrong.

"They are not the military, they are only ordinary people," al-Alagi said. While he aknowledged that rebels have made mistakes, he said they cannot be described as "war crimes at all."

In addition, the report said both sides stirred up racism and xenophobia, causing sub-Saharan Africans to be increasingly attacked, robbed and abused by ordinary Libyans.

"In February, there was this rumor about Gadhafi using black people as mercenaries; that's wrong," Nicolas Beger, director of the Amnesty International European Institutions office, told Associated Press Television News in Brussels on Monday. "But the NTC has not done a lot to curb that rumor and now there is a lot of retaliation against sub-Saharan Africans. Whether they were or they weren't involved with the Gadhafi forces, they are at real risk of being taken from their work or their homes or the street to be tortured or killed."

Beger also said abuses were continuing under the new government.

"We have even spoken to guards who admit that they use force," he said. "They say, 'Yeah we use force in order to get confessions, in order to force people to hand in their weapons.' So this really needs to be controlled. This is one of the priorities that the new authorities have to really get a clear act on."

The report also listed an extensive list of crimes allegedly committed by Gadhafi's regime. The loyalists killed and injured scores of unarmed protesters, made critics disappear, used illegal cluster bombs, launched artillery, mortar and rocket attacks against residential areas, and, without any legal proceedings, executed captives, the report said.

Thousands of Libyans were kidnapped from their homes, mosques and streets, including children as young as 12, the report said.

The Amnesty International report was based on a fact-finding visit to Libya between Feb. 26 and May 28, and covered events up to late July. The organization is based in Britain.

Hard Drive History | Data Recovery,Data Backup

The hard drive is an important part of modern day computing, because it allows for information to be stored and then accessed at a later point. however, the modern day drive has its roots in technology that was developed over 50 years ago. The first drive was developed in 1956 and resembled what would look like a modern day air conditioning unit. The units of yesterday had extremely small storage capacities yet took up 100 times as much room. as technology evolved, the capacities of hard drives increased while they took up less and less space.

The Early Days

The first idea of a unit to store and receive data was imagined in 1953 by engineers at IBM. They recognized the need of a piece of hardware that could have high capacity, rapid access to the data, and be cheap to construct. The first technologies considered were wire matrices, rod arrays and even drum arrays. however, the disk drive was finally settled on as the unit of choice because of its ease of construction and easy mechanics. The first drive was the IBM 305 RAMAC system which could store 4.4 megabytes at a cost of $160,000 in today?s money.

1950s-1970s

The IBM 350 disk file turned out to be a very big success for IBM and the age of the hard drive was officially born. however, the performance of this first device was laughable in comparison to what the cheapest units can achieve today. The IBM 350 disk file was capable of accessing the information in less than 1 second ? in comparison almost all hard drives in existence today can access information in just a few milliseconds. however, access time soon decreased substantially and by 1961 the 4000 series disk drives were capable of an access time of just 50 ms. In 1973, IBM introduced the IBM 3340 disk drive. this was the first hard drive that made use of lubricated and low mass media to ensure smooth operation and less maintenance.

The Personal Computer Era

When the personal computer revolution began in the 1980s, the primary means of storing and retrieving data on a computer was via floppy disks. thus, most personal computers lacked a hard drive because they were still too expensive to manufacture and they couldn?t compete with floppy disks in terms of pure storage capacity. however, by the late 1980s they were starting to replace floppy disks as the primary method of storage on personal computers. by the mid-1990s virtually all personal computers shipped with some type of internal drive because they were now much cheaper than floppy disks in terms of the amount of storage available.

Present

After the hard drive became a staple in the personal computer industry in the early 1990s, they have continued to become faster, smaller, and with higher capacities. Hard drives are currently extremely cheap and can store large amounts of information, some on the order of up to 5 terabytes of data. The future of the devices isn?t clear, but most experts agree that they will be phased out and replaced with the much more technologically advanced solid state drive. a solid state drive doesn?t have moving parts and therefore has a longer lifespan and is easier to maintain versus a normal hard drive.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Reggie Wayne believes Sunday's game at Houston will be just like any other Colts' season opener.

He's excited to play some meaningful football, even if his old pal, Peyton Manning, isn't throwing him the dang ball.

"The next guy is going to have to step up," he said Friday. "And everybody is going to have to rally around that guy."

Next man up has been a mantra Indianapolis players have embraced for nearly a decade. But until now Tony Dungy's three-word phrase never applied to an Indianapolis quarterback.

Manning's streak of 227 consecutive starts including the playoffs will end Sunday in Houston, three days after his latest neck surgery. He's expected to be out at least two months and perhaps for the entire season, temporarily leaving Kerry Collins in charge of the team Manning has run since September 1998.

Team officials did not provide any additional medical updates Friday.

Under Manning's leadership, Indianapolis has become an annual Super Bowl contender.

Without him, most of the so-called experts say the Colts are an average to below average team and that the NFL world is about to see just how many mistakes Manning covered up. Many say Indianapolis is headed for a doomed season that will end its record-tying run of nine straight playoff appearances.

Inside the locker room, players don't buy it.

Veteran leaders such as Wayne and Dwight Freeney have long proclaimed that while Manning is the engineer of Indy's success, it's never been just a one-man show.

"What can you do about it? There's nothing you can do," Wayne said of the dire predictions. "Either let it go on deaf ears or you let it bother you. I think everyone in this locker room has dealt with it the same way and that's to not let it bother us at all. We don't feel like we have to prove anything to anybody, and we're going to go out there and it's going to be the same mentality."

Of course, the Colts have won without Manning playing his best ball.

? In 2006, the Colts won the Super Bowl with Manning throwing seven interceptions and only three touchdowns in four postseason games. And the Colts wouldn't have reached the big game without Adam Vinatieri making five field goals in a 15-6 second-round win at Baltimore.

? Indy's best seasons have typically come when the speedy defense has played at its best.

? Even the Texans have seen the Colts' defense win games. In 2008, the Colts forced three turnovers in the final five minutes, producing an incredible 21-point rally to give Indy a 31-27 victory.

While Manning got the accolades then, those around him always knew the four-time MVP wasn't doing it by himself. Neither can Collins, the new next man up.

"Peyton's so unique in the things he does, and I don't think anybody expects me to go out there and run the offense like Peyton Manning," said Collins, who has had 16 days to learn the system. "That's a whole other ballgame that we're talking about. But I know that I'm very comfortable with what we're doing."

Clearly, things will be different Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen acknowledged the Colts are likely to huddle up more often and make fewer calls at the line of scrimmage ? a trademark of the Manning era. They also may run more often with two former first-round draft picks, Joseph Addai and Donald Brown, in the backfield.

Collins will find himself surrounded by arguably the deepest group of receivers he's ever played with. Besides Wayne, he can throw to 2009 playoff star Pierre Garcon, Pro Bowl tight end Dallas Clark and last year's breakout tight end, Jacob Tamme. Receivers Austin Collie and Anthony Gonzalez are listed as questionable, but did practice all week.

It's not just the offense that fans worry about.

"I guess that would imply that when the offense is at full speed, we say, 'Oh well, the offense, they have it,'" Freeney said when asked Wednesday if the defense has to do more with Manning out. "That's not our mentality. We go out, no matter who's out there and no matter what they're doing on the offensive side, it's the same mentality on the defense. We are going to try to stop them every down, try to get them off the field, try to get our offense the ball back, and that's pretty much what it is."

The Colts have a roster stocked with talent.

Even without Manning, eight of the 22 other starters, including Collins, have played in a Pro Bowl. They've added three former first-round picks to the defense: linemen Jamaal Anderson and Tyler Brayton and linebacker Ernie Sims. Collins gives them a quarterback on the verge of passing Joe Montana on the career yardage list.

Dungy, the Colts' Super Bowl-winning coach and now an NBC analyst, told viewers Thursday night he believed Colts players do have something to prove -- a sentiment that came through loud and clear throughout the locker room Friday.

Opponents are heeding the warning.

"I think they're a different team without him (Manning), of course. I think all in all they're still an NFL team," Tennessee linebacker Will Witherspoon said. "They're still a team that can surprise you and do things every Sunday."

And the Colts are out to prove they can keep winning ? with or without Manning.

"You're here to do your job. We weren't brought here to be second fiddle to anybody. You've just got to do your job," Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis said. "His (Manning's) resume speaks for itself. But we're not going to lay down for anybody. So if you want to count us out, go ahead and do that."
