Mom in hot sauce case spared jail time

An Alaska woman convicted of punishing her adopted Russian son by squirting hot sauce into his mouth was spared immediate jail time on Monday.

Thirty-six-year-old Jessica Beagley was given three years of probation, a 180-day suspended jail sentence and a $2,500 fine ? also suspended ? after she was convicted last week of misdemeanor child abuse. Prosecutors say she used a videotape of herself punishing the 7-year-old boy as a ploy to get on the "Dr. Phil" TV show.

Beagley submitted the eight-minute tape for a show segment titled "Mommy Confessions." She said the boy had lied about getting into trouble at school.

After squirting hot sauce in the boy's mouth for lying, she put him in a cold shower for getting in trouble in school.

Beagley had faced a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $10,000 fine. She and her husband, Gary, an Anchorage police officer, adopted the boy and his twin brother in 2008. The boys were 5 years old at the time and had spent three years in an orphanage.

Before that, their family had lived in a shack and the twins slept on shelves in an armoire. One twin adjusted to his new home in Alaska, but the other exhibited behavioral problems that included lying and urinating on the floor.

Beagley's attorney said his client turned to unconventional forms of punishment when spankings, time-outs and restricting television were ineffective in changing the boy's behavior.

Mom turned to "Dr. Phil" for help
Defense attorney William Ingaldson contended Beagley had reached out to the "Dr. Phil" show for help. The incident that sparked the videotaped punishment occurred at school.

The boy got in trouble for sword-fighting with pencils, and, his mother said, lying about it. Beagley recorded the punishment on Oct. 21, 2010, so she could get on the television show, prosecutor Cynthia Franklin said.

Franklin told the jury it wasn't Beagley's first attempt. After seeing a segment in April 2009 titled "Angry Moms," she contacted the show but heard nothing for a year and a half, Franklin said.

The show eventually called to find out if Beagley was still angry, she said. Beagley submitted audition videos in which she yelled at the boy, but producers said they needed to see her actually punishing her son, the prosecutor said.

That's when Beagley got the video camera ready, made sure there was enough hot sauce on the shelf in the bathroom and recruited her 10-year-old daughter to shoot the video, Franklin said.

Days later, she was headed to Los Angeles to tape the show that first aired Nov. 17. The episode sparked public outrage in Russia, with some people demanding the boy and his twin brother be returned to their native country.

(AP) ? Irene is gone, and East Coast airports have reopened. But it will take at least several days to get hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded by the storm to their final destinations.

Behind the scenes, ground crews worked through the night to get planes ready, air traffic controllers prepared for a deluge of takeoffs and landings and extra pilots and other employees were called into action.

Airports in New York, Boston and Philadelphia bustled Monday after being closed for part or all of the weekend. The week before Labor Day is always a busy one for airlines, so they struggled to cram travelers stranded by Irene onto already-packed planes.

To make matters worse, more than 1,600 flight were cancelled Monday, adding to the nearly 12,000 grounded this weekend, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. The service estimates that 650,000 passengers have been stuck on the ground since Irene hit, but some experts think it's a million or more.

For airlines, restoring service in three major East Coast cities required a lot of scrambling.

American Airlines pilot Sam Mayer on Monday flew a 757 back to its home New York from Orlando, Fla., where it had been grounded for two days.

It was a full flight.

"We left a lot of people at the gate that couldn't get on," Mayer said.

When a huge storm hits, airlines don't have full control over when they fly. Airports close, mass transit shuts down, roads get blocked ? all creating a situation where the airline might not have any passengers, or might not be able to fly even if the weather at the airport isn't bad yet.

Planes were parked this weekend at airports from California to Orlando. JetBlue had to move more than 50 planes ? a third of its fleet ? away from its home base in New York. Finding extra space for those planes meant dividing them up among more than two dozen airports.

"We had airplanes stacked up like cordwood," JetBlue CEO Dave Barger said in an interview with CNBC.

Duane and Jackie Skene of Jackson, Mich., were supposed to return from a vacation at an Italian resort on Sunday morning, but their flight to New York was canceled. They stayed with friends in Germany and got on another flight to New York early Monday. But they had trouble booking a connecting flight to Detroit.

"We thought we were going to sleep in JFK tonight," Duane Skene said.

It turned out they were on an earlier Delta flight that arrived on time in Detroit Monday afternoon.

"I was anxious until I was sitting on the plane," Jackie Skene said.

Some passengers opted for other means of travel.

Joseph McCann, 22, of Northern Ireland, flew into Philadelphia with a friend on Monday morning. From there, they were supposed to catch a connecting flight to Newark, N.J., but the flight was canceled. He took a bus instead, arriving about 5 hours later than originally scheduled.

Stephanie Neppl, 36, of Auckland, New Zealand, was frustrated with United Airlines for grounding her flight from Chicago to New York on Friday, delaying her trip to watch the opening rounds of the U.S. Open. Neppl had planned the trip so she could watch all four major tennis tournaments in one year, having already been to Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open earlier this year.

"At this stage, Thursday is the earliest I can get there because of restrictions and the airport being closed all weekend," said Neppl, who was watching the opening rounds on TV instead of live. "I'm sitting in my parents' house in Iowa just trying to see if I can get to New York and it's just bloody impossible."

Meanwhile, Amtrak says it's not clear when service will return along the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Philadelphia after Hurricane Irene. Floodwaters remained Monday on the tracks in Trenton, N.J., used by Amtrak and commuter trains.

Spokeswoman Danelle Hunter says the rail line is also dealing with power issues in some areas. And crews worked Monday afternoon to remove trees and other debris that got pushed on the tracks by Irene.

Hunter says trains are running as usual between Washington and Philadelphia.

The storm is expected to cost U.S. airlines $200 million in revenue ? between lost flying and ticket-change fee waivers. Airline officials estimate it will take about two days to get every plane and crew member back in place.

"The next couple of days are going to be trying," said Mike Flores, a US Airways flight attendant and union president. "Once we get to work we're going to be dealing with a lot people who have been up for 24 hours, camped out in airports."

Disney Inks Deal with Greenbox, Chinese eCommerce Is Taking Off

mail-1A lot of Americans desperately want to believe that China is full of poor people who can't innovate, and the only goods they make are cheap, toxic rip-offs our Western brands. They want to believe the only reason the Chinese economy is surging is because the West wants cheap goods and China knows how to make them that way. These people will hate this post because it's about a company called Greenbox that flies in the face of those preconceived notions.

The history of Pro Wrestling News

Sports Wrestling

Pro Wrestling in itself one of the most original forms of entertainment out there. Some call it a sport to call the one hand, it is a soap opera and others call a traveling show. For something so hard it is equally difficult to drawer for journalists covered the news of wrestling.

Would cover exposed in the era of the dinosaurs was wrestling Wrestling News journalists, as it would have been a real sport like boxing. They would report on theEvents, make notes and then just when a wrestler won. As we have developed and the stories (like soap operas) have been working for the industry, (especially during the era of entertainment and WWE Monday Night Wars) "Mark Magazines" would cover wrestling, as if these stories were real. If The Rock threw Steve Austin in a river (yes, that happened once), the author writes as if it was the craziest thing that could ever happen in a sport was. This was a unique system thathelped to promote the sport. Today a lot of negativity is also reported.

As the Internet developed and "Dirt Sheet" newsletters and websites sprung up, more or less knew the truth all the fans that wrestling was fake wrestling news was not what happened in the ring, but what happens behind the curtain. Nobody wanted to magazines, buy what changes have been seen on television. Insider News is born.

Why were certain wrestlers in the top positions when they were wrong?Who decided somebody would win and why? Instead of a surprise victory over the title of the political reasons behind a lesser star would be getting the victory. This has caused many changes to the deviation of the stories in which the promoters saw results and details online or in printed form.

This is a shock that many insider wrestling publish news pages spoilers and get information long before it aired on television. The reason for this is because over the years have become friends with journalistscertain wrestlers or members of management and the people in the WWE leaked the information themselves.

It is not uncommon to see newsletters or wrestling news sites on the desks or laptops of wrestlers.

Wrestling News is evolving even now. The sheer speed that some of the news sites leaves less "inside" for journalists, from day to day news and analysis. Now many wrestling journalists give their expert opinion on the news orStories instead of writing actual stories.

One criticism that some wrestling news sites involves the receipt of a small number of large sites (most born 1998-2002), which are practically identical and the use of a system of the Union. This includes a few journalists who follow the same messages on all Web sites in exchange for a link on their own, leading to a large network of content exactly the same.

Another point of criticism that includes made ??to Wrestling News SitesJournalists go to a premium service. The reader should be used to access the message from some of the journalists a long time wrestling news that seems crazy in this day and age of free information to pay.

Wrestling news will continue to evolve with the sport and technique. Who knows? Maybe in the future we get wrestling news brain implants?

Could new drug cure nearly any viral infection? Technology shows promise against common cold, influenza and other ailments, researchers say

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2011) ? Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

In a paper published July 27 in the journal PLoS ONE, the researchers tested their drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them -- including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.

The drug works by targeting a type of RNA produced only in cells that have been infected by viruses. "In theory, it should work against all viruses," says Todd Rider, a senior staff scientist in Lincoln Laboratory's Chemical, Biological, and Nanoscale Technologies Group who invented the new technology.

Because the technology is so broad-spectrum, it could potentially also be used to combat outbreaks of new viruses, such as the 2003 SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak, Rider says.

Other members of the research team are Lincoln Lab staff members Scott Wick, Christina Zook, Tara Boettcher, Jennifer Pancoast and Benjamin Zusman.

Few antivirals available

Rider had the idea to try developing a broad-spectrum antiviral therapy about 11 years ago, after inventing CANARY (Cellular Analysis and Notification of Antigen Risks and Yields), a biosensor that can rapidly identify pathogens. "If you detect a pathogenic bacterium in the environment, there is probably an antibiotic that could be used to treat someone exposed to that, but I realized there are very few treatments out there for viruses," he says.

There are a handful of drugs that combat specific viruses, such as the protease inhibitors used to control HIV infection, but these are relatively few in number and susceptible to viral resistance.

Rider drew inspiration for his therapeutic agents, dubbed DRACOs (Double-stranded RNA Activated Caspase Oligomerizers), from living cells' own defense systems.

When viruses infect a cell, they take over its cellular machinery for their own purpose -- that is, creating more copies of the virus. During this process, the viruses create long strings of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), which is not found in human or other animal cells.

As part of their natural defenses against viral infection, human cells have proteins that latch onto dsRNA, setting off a cascade of reactions that prevents the virus from replicating itself. However, many viruses can outsmart that system by blocking one of the steps further down the cascade.

Rider had the idea to combine a dsRNA-binding protein with another protein that induces cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell suicide) -- launched, for example, when a cell determines it is en route to becoming cancerous. Therefore, when one end of the DRACO binds to dsRNA, it signals the other end of the DRACO to initiate cell suicide.

Combining those two elements is a "great idea" and a very novel approach, says Karla Kirkegaard, professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University. "Viruses are pretty good at developing resistance to things we try against them, but in this case, it's hard to think of a simple pathway to drug resistance," she says.

Each DRACO also includes a "delivery tag," taken from naturally occurring proteins, that allows it to cross cell membranes and enter any human or animal cell. However, if no dsRNA is present, DRACO leaves the cell unharmed.

Most of the tests reported in this study were done in human and animal cells cultured in the lab, but the researchers also tested DRACO in mice infected with the H1N1 influenza virus. When mice were treated with DRACO, they were completely cured of the infection. The tests also showed that DRACO itself is not toxic to mice.

The researchers are now testing DRACO against more viruses in mice and beginning to get promising results. Rider says he hopes to license the technology for trials in larger animals and for eventual human clinical trials.

This work is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the New England Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, with previous funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and Director of Defense Research & Engineering (now the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering).

Troops photographing 219,000 Arlington graves

Night after night this summer, troops from the Army's historic Old Guard have left their immaculately pressed dress blues, white gloves and shiny black boots at home to slip into Arlington National Cemetery in T-shirts and flip-flops to photograph each and every grave with an iPhone.

The sometimes eerie task to photograph more than 219,000 grave markers and the front of more than 43,000 sets of cremated remains in the columbarium is part of the Army's effort to account for every grave and to update and fully digitize the cemetery's maps. The Old Guard performs its work at night to escape the summer heat and to avoid interrupting funerals.

Last year a scandal over mismanagement at the nation's most hallowed burial ground revealed unmarked and mismarked graves. Congress then mandated that the cemetery account for the graves of the more than 330,000 people interred in the cemetery. Markers may bear more than one name, such as a service member and spouse.

The photos taken at night are matched with other records to find discrepancies that need to be fixed, and officials say it's too early in the process to draw any conclusions. Military officials hope they can eventually use the photos to create an online database for the public. Four million people annually visit the cemetery.

The Old Guard troops typically escort remains and fire three-volley salutes at military funerals. When taking photos, they have middle-of-the-night run-ins with rabbits, foxes and deer in the cemetery, which is situated on the estate where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once lived. Using head lamps to light their way, they've tripped in shallow holes and brushed aside countless spider webs. They've paused at seeing freshly dug graves prepared for the next day's funerals.

One soldier, Spc. Raymond Piron, 22, of Detroit, says he was working one night in an old section of the cemetery when he felt something tap him on the shoulder. He turned around, but he was alone.

Before this summer, Spc. Craig Green, 21, of Dover, Del., a broad-shouldered, tough-looking Iraq war veteran, says that when it came to walking cemeteries at night, "you couldn't pay me to do it."

At least one of the soldiers, Sgt. Yvens Saintil, 26, of Philadelphia, who has done two tours in Iraq, says he has friends buried in the cemetery. He has taken time to find their graves and pay respects, even though his duties didn't include photographing their graves.

"At first I was kind of sad a little bit, but it's just part of the mission to continue your mission," Saintil says while standing in the columbarium shortly after sunrise on a recent morning.

The mission is called Task Force Christman, in honor of Pvt. William Henry Christman, an Easton, Pa., native and Civil War soldier who was the first soldier buried at Arlington. The troops executing it are from Delta Company of the 1st Battalion of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard ? the Army's official ceremonial unit, which provides escorts to the president and helps put on military funerals.

With an average of 27 funerals conducted daily at the cemetery, leaders from the Old Guard decided to slip about 60 troops in each night and send them home before the cemetery opened at 8 a.m. Initially, the men wore basic Army utility uniforms, but they later switched to comfortable civilian clothes after it was determined the photos were of better quality without the light reflected off the patches on their uniforms.

The troops have walked Section 60, where loved ones commonly leave whiskey bottles and children's art at the graves of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Section 27, where about 1,500 black soldiers from the Civil War were laid to rest. They've seen monuments small and large ? including one more than 14 feet tall marking President William Howard Taft's grave. They had to sit on each other's shoulders to get a good shot.

They've captured the grave marker of astronauts, combat nurses, Medal of Honor recipients and unnamed infants born to service members.

In the early hours on Wednesday, one of the last nights of their three-month mission, the troops were in Section 15, a relatively flat part of the cemetery where two sons of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet share a tombstone. They needed to re-shoot the photos in the section because the graves there had been numbered in a way that had made their earlier photos difficult to categorize.

Sometimes, the men worked in silence as one soldier shown a light on a grave while another squatted to photograph it. Other times they chatted about football, or debated the best flavor of Gatorade.

In June 2010, the Army's inspector general released a scathing report on mismanagement at the cemetery, which prompted the Army to immediately bring in new managers and instigate efforts to rectify the problems. Among other things, the IG said it found 117 gravesites marked as occupied on maps but without a headstone or a burial card. Ninety-four gravesites were marked on the maps as unoccupied, but each had a headstone and a burial card. Some gravesites were not reflected on the burial maps.

Criminal investigators have been looking into the burial of eight sets of cremated human remains in a single location, improper burial reservations and possible contract fraud. Just last week, the cemetery said that Army criminal investigators had identified a figure skater in a photograph found in the urn with the multiple remains, meaning it could confirm the identity of the remains and notify the family.

The troops say they take seriously their role in restoring order to the cemetery. They reported to cemetery managers any problems, such as a few graves with duplicative headstones, so the issues could be resolved.

"It's something that's important that needs to be done so that family members can come out here and understand where they need to go to find their loved ones," said Spc. Matthew Caruso, 24, of Staatsburg, N.Y. "It's a good feeling, but it can be pretty stressful and it's a lot of hard work and a lot of walking."

Bomb planted in tricycle kills 8 in Pakistan

(AP) ? A bomb planted in a child's tricycle exploded outside a shop in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least eight people and damaging several stores and hotels, police said.

The attack occurred in the main bazaar in the town of Risalpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Mohammad Hussain, police chief for surrounding Nowshera district. Shoppers were buying goods for an upcoming Muslim holiday when the bomb went off. At least nine people were wounded, Hussain said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Pakistani Taliban has carried out many bombings throughout the northwest.

Also Thursday, unknown gunmen opened fire on police at the gate of a hospital in the northwest town of Dera Ismail Khan, killing one policeman on duty, said Mohammad Nawaz, the local police chief.

Furnace Ratings | Furnaces

furnace ratings

Replacing a furnace can be a difficult decision for a home owner but in the long run, it will save a substantial amount that will cover the furnace replacement cost. When making a decision, one should consider the size as well as the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) Rating.

The size of the replacement furnace will also affect the furnace replacement cost and this is determined by the total space area of the house. AFUE Rating which is similar to the CAFE mileage is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy that is aimed at helping customers identify energy saving appliances.

Appliances that have higher ratings are more expensive and cost more to buy but in the long run they save enough money to exceed the difference. When planning your furnace replacement cost, it is important to compare prices from different furnace dealers or home improvement companies so that you can be sufficiently armed with enough information before you place your order.
You could try looking into the AFUE rating of each particular furnace before you place an order. This is relevant because if you pick a furnace with a good rating, it could qualify you for tax credit.

As a customer, you need to understand your worth and know that your business is important to companies that deal in furnace replacement. This will give you an edge when you are negotiating and will help you to arrive at a reasonable furnace replacement cost. Most home improvement services and companies would like to do business with you and they are willing to work within your budget.

The warranty terms on a new furnace should also be looked into when planning your furnace replacement cost. Warranty terms vary among the different manufacturers as some offer lifetime warranty while others offer warranty that will only cover a certain period.

The installation cost and the cost of removing the old furnace is an area many people tend to take for granted when drawing up their furnace replacement cost. Ensure that you request a flat rate which would include a detailed estimated breakdown of all the charges related with the purchase. The existing ductwork can still be reused and may not be included in the estimate.

You will need to make some assumptions in order to develop a baseline replacement cost estimate. For example the size of your home, the low temperature for which reason you are purchasing the furnace, and the efficiency of the insulation and windows.

The best time to get a very fair furnace replacement cost is during the non winter season preferably in July. The fuel oil and furnace dealers are relaxed during this period which will give you a good negotiating edge.

Although furnace replacement costs can be discouraging, particularly in the present economic climate, if you work with a reputable home improvement company, you could save yourself a lot of trouble later on. A furnace that is well installed will save you money in the long run.

Types Of Interviews | Self Improvement Articles and Tips

Types Of Interviews

Interviewers are of different types and personalities. They may be amateurs or professionals. They could be polite, and encouraging or bossy and rude.

Similarly, interviews can be of different kinds based on the personality and conveniences of the interviewer and the requirements of the employer. Some of the common types are listed here:

Screening interview

Many organizations use screening tools to check if the applicants meet the minimum requirements. The tools used include telephone, computer programs or professionals. Such interviewers have skills to detect anything that disqualifies you from being interviewed. Their focus here is not to see whether your skills fit their job vacancy but mainly to find out if you are not eligible to comply with their requirements. They will pick gaps in your work history or any inconsistencies on your resume. Another area they look into is the costs of hiring you. If you prove to be too expensive for the organization, chances are that you may never get that crucial call.

Telephone Interviews

Many companies use telephone interviews for the initial screening. So be prepared for the same after applying for a job. You can list down all the information regarding the position, company and job description of the post you have applied for. You can use this information to your own benefit when you get a call from the company. Phone interviews give a chance to the company to design a feedback of your interests, skills, expectations etc. If their requirements match with your strengths then the next step would be a personal interview.

Phone interviews generally follow two steps. The first call would be from the Human Resources department. The next step call could be from the manager or supervisor, who would be conducting a technical interview. These are usually conducted for out station candidates. This initial screening is done to ascertain that your technical kills match with their requirement before deciding to invest time and money in scheduling a personal interview.

Points to remember during screening interviews

? Highlight your educational qualifications and skills.

? Answer questions clearly and concisely. The interviewer is more interested here in screening your qualifications than focusing on your personality.

? While dealing with salary expectations, be tactful by giving a range rather than quoting exact figures. Express your willingness to consider the best offer of the company.

? In case of phone interviews, keep essential information ready on cue cards or postids and place them near the phone.

Group Interviews

Many employers interview a number of candidates of a group. Don?t relax in such social settings. The interviewer is watching and evaluating your responses in the context of the group. Your team skills would be clearly known in this setting.

Points to remember while navigating a group interview

? Be polite to the others while exerting your influence over them.

? Avoid direct confrontations which may sound bossy and uncooperative.

? Do not get so swayed by the group that you fail to pick important cues from the interviewer.

Panel Interviews

A panel may consist of a group of interviewers, anywhere between three to eight people who will be interviewing you simultaneously. This may make you nervous but you can handle it if you are confident and answer without any hesitations. Be careful of your posture but don?t appear to be self-conscious.

Remember to address the person while answering the question asked by him and at the same time directing your eye contact with the other interviewers of the panel. In fact your eyecontact with a friendly face in the panel can relax you to a great extent. Later remember to write a thank-you note to all the members of the panel and get the required contact information for the same.

Keep a few guidelines in mind while attending a panel interview.

? Regard each member of the team with respect and address them by name if possible. Speak directly to the member of the panel asking you the question.

? Make use of this opportunity to gain different perspectives of the company.

? Be prepared to demonstrate your skills in a number of ways to the different members of the panel.

? You have to be more energetic and alert in this kind of an interview than the traditional interview.

One ?On ?One Interviews

This is a traditional way of interviewing. It would be better to match the style of the interviewer and maintain proper eye contact with him. Generally, these interviews are informal and hence, not difficult to handle. You would find yourself freely exchanging information as in a normal conversation. But remember that if the interviewer is serious, it doesn?t help if you sound jovial in the interview.

On-campus interviews

On-campus interviews present a challenge to the students as they have limited time with the recruiting agency. You have to prepare yourself to use the time beneficially.

On-Site interviews

When the interview is scheduled at the office of an employer, you need to keep certain things in mind. Arrive at the venue in advance so that you can be relaxed and get acquainted with the environment. Be polite to everyone you meet on site. Remember that they may be employees of the company so never give out personal opinions to any one you might meet at the venue.

Hypothetical Interviews

Hypothetical Interviews are basically used by companies to test the candidates? skills in proplem solving and logical reasoning. You are put in a situation where you have to think fast and assess the problem by keeping in mind the company?s values and policies.

Your goal should be to use logical thinking and analysis to arrive at a solution and not necessarily worry about the final outcome. Many a times there cannot be one definite solution for a problem. You can use one or a combination of strategies to tackle such interviews like gathering, evaluating and prioitizing information. Later you may also choose, propose and discuss all possible solutions as well.

Examples:

What will be your reaction if you see an experienced employee of the company stealing from the department? How will you handle the situation if four out of five employees are absent during their shift? What will you do to curb unethical practices in the work place?

Stress Interviews

You might be made to wait for a long time before getting to meet the interviewer. You may be greeted with hard stares and long silences or directly challenged by the interviewer on your opinions. This is done to test whether you can handle the company culture and its clients

Stress Interviews are intended to test your stress levels. The direct and persistent questions by the employer may put you off guard. The focus here should be on staying cool and calm and in command of the situation. It is necessary to show your employer that you will not buckle under pressure.

Examples:

I don?t know if you are suitable for this post.
Why is your GPA so low?

Points to remember

? Don?t forget that it is a built up situation and not a personal war.

? Try to be cool and tactful even if the interviewer seems insulting.

? If you are stressed out , it will be difficult to have a clear perspective so try and be relaxed and calm while attending the interview

Case Interview

Some consulting companies and big businesses test your critical thinking during the interview process. Such interviews demand a two-way communication between the interviewer and the candidate. More than the appropriate answers, what you are tested for in such interviews is your skills in problem solving, your creativity and common sense.

You may use the same set of skills as in Hypothetical interviews, like gathering, evaluating and prioitizing information. Later choosing, proposing and discussing the possible solutions is also an option for you.

The questions may be related to the current case or ongoing project of the company or they may be any general questions like why is a round shaped disc used to cover a man-hole? How many coins can fit in a square box?

Informational Interview

An informational Interview is initiated by the job seeker for reasons like seeking advice of an influential person in their current field or to get references of people in that field. Employers, who like to know of the talent available in the market, even though they do not have immediate job openings in their company, are ready to give time for such interviews. There is a great exchange of information during informational interviews and the atmosphere is more relaxed.

But all the same attending such interviews need careful planning and keep some guidelines in mind

? Prepare a list of intelligent questions relating to the company and its working.

? Try to collect references of people related to this field and ensure that the interviewer has no hassles if you use his name to contact the references.

? Give a copy of your resume, contact information and card to the interviewer before leaving.

? Don?t forget to send a thank you letter to the interviewer for his time and attention.

Mealtime interview

Companies whose jobs require interpersonal skills prefer to interview their candidates over meals. You may be tested for your personal skills in a social setting. Are you natural and relaxed or jittery and confused? The manner in which you handle the meal, the guests, host and serving staff may also be a subject of scrutiny.

Keep in mind basic social etiquettes while mixing pleasure with work.

? Sit down only after the host does and order some simple, no fuss dish. If your host recommends a particular dish or appetizer, give in. Wait for your host to begin the meal. You may have to keep your host?s company if he prefers to have dessert and coffee.

? Discern the mood of the interviewer and discuss the issues that he brings forth, whether it is his travel plans or business.

? Avoid stating your dietary preferences and being averse to particular foods.

? Select manageable food and avoid having food sticking to your teeth. Check it discretely.

? Have practice sessions discussing important issues and eating meals at the same time.

? Don?t forget to thank the interviewer for the time and the meal.

North Korean leader arrives at Russia-China border (AP)

MOSCOW ? The North Korean leader's armored train arrived at the Russia-China border late Thursday, and is expected to cross into Manchuria in China's northeast shortly, a Russian news agency reported.

Kim Jong Il's train was seen at the Zabaikalsk railway station a day after he met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for talks in a Siberian city, Interfax reported.

After the meeting, Kim agreed to impose a nuclear test and production moratorium if international talks on Pyongyang's atomic program resume. He also expressed readiness to return to the discussions without preconditions, the Kremlin said.

Faced with deepening sanctions and economic woes, North Korea has pushed to restart the six-sided talks that involve both Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Kim's apparent offer was "a welcome first step" but not enough to restart the long-stalled talks meant to end the North's nuclear weapons ambitions.

Washington and Seoul have been wary of the North's repeated calls for new six-party nuclear talks, calling first for an improvement in dismal ties between the Koreas and for a sincere sign from the North that it will abide by past commitments it has made in previous rounds of talks.

North Korea is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least six atomic bombs, and is believed to be working toward mounting a nuclear bomb on a long-range missile.

Russia and North Korea also moved forward this week on a proposal to build a pipeline that will ship Russian natural gas to both Koreas.
