Observing the galaxy distribution when the universe was half its current age

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? At the UK-Germany National Astronomy Meeting NAM2012, the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) team has just announced the most accurate measurement yet of the distribution of galaxies between five and six billion years ago. This was the key 'pivot' moment at which the expansion of the universe stopped slowing down due to gravity and started to accelerate instead, due to a mysterious force dubbed "dark energy." The nature of this "dark energy" is one of the big mysteries in cosmology today, and scientists need precise measurements of the expansion history of the universe to unravel this mystery -- BOSS provides this kind of data. In a set of six joint papers presented March 30, the BOSS team, an international group of scientists with the participation of the Max Planck Institute of Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany, used these data together with previous measurements to place tight constraints on various cosmological models.

The BOSS survey, which is a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III), was started in 2009 to probe the universe at a time when dark energy started to dominate. The survey will continue until 2014, collecting data for 1.35 million galaxies with a custom-designed new spectrograph on the 2.5-metre Sloan Telescope at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, USA. In the first year-and-a-half, it has already mapped the three-dimensional positions of more than a quarter of a million galaxies spread across about one tenth of the sky, yielding the most accurate and complete map of the galaxy distribution up to a distance of about 6 billion light years.

Galaxies form a "cosmic web" with a variety of structures which encode valuable information about our universe. One particular feature, the so-called "Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations" (BAO), has been subject of much interest from scientists as it provides them with a "standard rod." BAO are a relic of the early phases of the universe, when it was a hot and dense "soup" of particles. Small variations of density travelled through this "soup" as pressure-driven (sound) waves. As the universe expanded and cooled, the pressure dropped, causing these waves to stall after they had traveled about 500 million light years. These frozen waves imprinted a particular signature on the matter distribution and are visible in the galaxy map today: it is in fact slightly more probable to find pairs of galaxies separated by this scale than at smaller or larger distances.

Measurements of the apparent size of the BAO scale in the galaxy distribution then provide information about cosmic distances. Combined with the measurement of the galaxies' redshift -- a measure for how fast they move away as a result of the cosmic expansion -- scientists can then reconstruct the expansion history of the universe.

The new BOSS data, combined with previous analyses, can now constrain the parameters of the standard cosmological model to an accuracy of better than five per cent. "All the different lines of evidence point to the same explanation," says Dr. Ariel Sanchez, scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and lead author of one of the six new papers. "The dark energy is consistent with Einstein's cosmological constant: a small but irreducible energy continually stretching space itself, driving the accelerated expansion of the universe."

Besides dark energy, the information encoded in the large-scale distribution of galaxies can be used to obtain robust constraints on other important physical parameters such as the curvature of the universe, the neutrino mass, or the phase of inflation in the very early universe. "Current observations show that the universe has to be flat, to an accuracy better than 0.5 per cent," says Ariel Sanchez. "And at the same time as we measure such a global parameter on a cosmic scale, we can also get information about neutrinos on the smallest scales in the cosmos."

Neutrinos are tiny, subatomic particles. Even though a number of experiments have shown that they must have mass, scientists do not know how much they actually weigh, as it is difficult to measure this in a laboratory. However, as an additional component in the hot, early phase of the universe the neutrinos affect the growth of structures. The galaxy distribution probed by BOSS provides information about the maximum mass that these neutrinos are allowed to have. "This is really the connection of two extreme worlds, the very large and the very small," adds Ariel Sanchez.

The quality of the new data even provided the BOSS team with new clues about cosmic inflation, a period of time shortly after the Big Bang during which the universe expanded at an incredible rate. During cosmic inflation, small regions of space were blown out to form our entire observable universe. At the same time, tiny quantum fluctuations also expanded and became the seeds of the structures that the BOSS data show us today. "There is a real zoo of alternative models of inflation. With BOSS we get important new clues about the inflationary phase of the universe, which allows us to pare down the market of available models," remarks Ariel Sanchez.

So far, all measurements are highly consistent with the standard cosmological model, which is made up of a few per cent ordinary matter, about a quarter of dark matter, and the rest dark energy. But Ariel Sanchez is cautious: "This is just the beginning. We can expect much tighter constraints once we have the full five years of BOSS data. There are also a number of future projects, such as EUCLID, that will provide even better measurements, bringing us one step closer to finding answers to the big open questions in cosmology."

MargeBlog: Review: MrChewy.com!

I was thrilled to be asked last week to do a review of MrChewy.com, an online dog and cat food website.

From what I hear, Mr. Chewy is a pretty popular guy and many bloggers have met him already. ?But, if you don't know the basic facts about Mr. Chewy, here they are:

  • They boast a selection of 70+ dog and cat food brands
  • They offer free shipping on orders over $49?
  • They donate to pet charities like Best Friends Animal Society and Bide-A-Wee for every new customer referred
  • They will gladly accept items back up to 1 year (365 days) since the date of sale.
Here are some of my thoughts on my shopping experience on MrChewy.com. ?I was given a $50 gift certificate to use to buy items in exchange for my review, and that is the only way in which I was compensated for this review.

Site Layout

The site layout is plain and clean, with no advertisements and simple menus. ?From the second you log on to the page, you can tell that MrChewy is clear in their focus to serve dog and cat owners. ?I think the narrower focus is a good thing - companies that try to cater to every type of animal couldn't possibly stock a large array of brands and items.

They have lots and lots of different sorting options, ranging from sorting items by brand to sorting them by the form of the food (dry, canned, etc.). ?This is definitely appreciated, as there would have been NO way for me to navigate through the 70+ brands without sorting them all different ways as I decided what I wanted to splurge on.

I would have liked to see an option for sorting by main ingredient or protein source, but I accomplished what I wanted just as easily by entering "duck" in the search bar. ?Up popped all of the duck-containing products on the website.

The verdict? No major complaints about the site layout. ?Lots of menus for sorting things is essential when so many different items are stocked. I would welcome seeing additional optional sorting menus as well.

Product Offerings

Now, let's get to the meat and potatoes (no pun intended) of what Mr. Chewy sells. ?There is a lot of stuff on there.

My goal was to buy lots of different things to try rather than taking the easy way out and stocking up on Marge's or Layla's food. ?I was pretty successful in that regard, because of the six items I purchased, five were things I had never tried before.. mostly because many of them aren't carried consistently in the pet stores here. ?

After several hours of perusing (yes, I am a VERY careful shopper), I decided to buy the following products:

  • PureBites Freeze Dried Duck Treats
  • Stella & Chewy Carnivore Crunch Duck, Duck, Goose Flavor Cat and Dog Treats
  • Sojos Good Dog Treats, Blueberry Cobbler Flavor
  • Stella & Chewy Freeze Dried Chicken Patties
  • Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-Free Duck & Turkey Dry Dog Food
  • Merrick Wishbone Treat

The first four aren't carried in the pet stores I frequent (and I live in NYC, for goodness sake, so I can't imagine my rural readers see a lot of these brands). ?The fifth is carried sparingly (and when it is carried, it's EXTREMELY expensive), and the sixth item I purchased with the last few dollars of my gift certificate.

Overall, their selection of brands is pretty exhaustive. ?They stock lots and lots of high-end kibbles, including Orijen, Taste of the Wild, Nature's Variety, and Wellness. ?I was tempted to buy and try a lot of them. They also carry some dehydrated raw products from Stella & Chewy and The Honest Kitchen. ?These are all well known, well respected brands, and I was excited to get to try them.

The treat selection is endless. ?Zuke's, Natural Balance, and lots of gourmet/raw brands I had never heard of before. ?I left the site wishing $50 could buy it all!

The prices on all of this stuff were very competitive, some of them beating the pet store prices by a pretty significant margin. As I continued browsing, I did see some supermarket brands... Iams, Beneful, Pedigree.. even a couple of products made in China. ?I didn't appreciate that these brands were being sold alongside their much-higher-quality counterparts. ?This made me question the focus or mission of MrChewy.com a little bit. ?I understand that their goal is to have a large selection of brands, but if they dropped the crummy brands and let the supermarkets handle those, perhaps they could have an even larger supply of high-quality foods. ?Maybe they could consider stocking pre-made frozen raw and not just dehydrated raw (since I can't find frozen raw in ANY of the stores around here). ?I'm sure those who live in rural or secluded areas and want to feed their pets high-quality diets would really appreciate another online buying option.

Still, virtually every large pet food company sells this type of stuff.. so I certainly wouldn't hesitate to order from them because of it. ?I am a careful consumer and check the ingredients and country of origin of everything I buy for my pets, regardless of what site it comes from, and I urge everyone to do the same.

My verdict on product choices? There's tons to choose from, including lots of top-notch brands and a plethora of different treats, but I think Mr. Chewy needs to drop the stuff that's packed with corn and fillers and can be picked up at just about any store. ?Replace the supermarket foods with even more offerings in grain-free and raw diets and the site will have a much clearer focus. ?

Product Information/Options

I absolutely loved being able to read the ingredients of just about any product right on the product page on MrChewy.com. ?This is particularly useful for people like me, who own animals with specific diet needs (Layla, I'm talking about you!!!!). ?It allowed me to reasonably narrow down which products I was interested in buying without having to go to the company websites.

The "Mr. Chewy's Recommendations" widget just underneath the product info was a nice touch, too. ?On a website so big, it can be easy to miss some of the products similar to the one you're looking at. ?In fact, I bought the Stella & Chewy's Chicken Patties after seeing them on the Recommendations widget while looking at another item.

There are also lots of reviews from customers, which a lot of pet food sites lack. ?I'm not sure whether this reflects positively on Mr. Chewy, its customers, or both, but I appreciated it.

One bone I had to pick with the website was that the product information itself was often incomplete. ?I, personally, would have appreciated being able to see which country each product was made in, since I do not feed my animals any products manufactured in China. ?I could have sworn that I saw something that read "Product of China" on one of the item pages, but I then never saw it again.

I also found that some products were miscategorized or incompletely categorized on the site. ?For example, there are some foods and treats that are appropriate for both dogs and cats, but I only found them under the dog food and treat menus, despite the fact that the product name clearly reads "For Dogs and Cats." ?I saw probiotic product clearly described as being helpful for digestive health listed under "Calming" supplements, which led me to not buy it because I wasn't sure exactly what it was.

Lastly, though I wanted to try a couple of different canned cat foods for delicate little Layla, I did not order any, because they only came in bulk sizes. ?I suppose this is part of Mr. Chewy's mission, to be a continuous supplier of dog and cat food to its customers (hence their repeat delivery options), but I thought it was worth a mention.

The verdict? I like the ingredients list, product recommendations, and customer reviews. ?Actual organization of products needs work, and I think the product descriptions can be beefed up a bit, with countries of origin added for all products in the interest of full disclosure.

Shipping

I ordered my items the night of March 27. I received my order March 29. ?So, they kept their promise of quick delivery times - all for free (since, even though I had a $50 gift certificate, shipping is free on orders over $49).

So, no complaint there whatsoever. ?I'm super inpatient about getting things quickly, so I was happy to get my order that fast!

The verdict? Shipping speed from PA to NY was very quick, as promised.

Now comes the really fun part - getting to try out all of our stuff :)

Over all, I really enjoyed my shopping experience on MrChewy.com and am very grateful that I was given the opportunity. ?The selection was huge, prices competitive, and the shipping times were great.

I think I'll use them occasionally for food and treat orders, especially because shipping is free on larger orders, since many of the products they carry are not found in all of the stores here (particularly, the raw foods). ?However, I don't plan on exercising their multiple shipments option, since I'm OK with going to the store if I need to in a pinch (I live in New York City, after all - the store's about a half mile away!). ?I urge you all to check them all out if you haven't already, particularly if you live in an area where some of the better brands might be hard to find.

Thanks for the experience, Mr. Chewy!

(Disclosure: I was given a $50 gift certificate with which to buy products. ?This review is based off of this experience. ?I was compensated in no other way for my review).

Low Priced Travel Insurance ? It Sometimes Is Not Always the Ideal ...

Before you begin comparing choices to find cheap travel insurance ? and there are many choices on the market ? you need to review your own situation and determine what you really want to guard against. This may seem like a difficult chore however it shouldn?t be. With any travel insurance plan there are two key elements. One insures against loss caused by travel related troubles while the other deals with medical conditions that can come up while out of town.

Once you understand the main insurance coverages you?re able to determine if you?ve got any unique requirements that will need to be taken into consideration. The majority of travel insurance plans sold in the market are viewed as a package policy that provides coverages both for travel along with medical issues. Many will have features that may be purchased for additional cost.

To hold the price down, look at your homeowners and health insurance plans. Find out if any provide travel related coverages; in particular loss or theft of personal property while you are abroad. Check if you?re health insurance policy provides any protection while on a trip. Some do unfortunately many don?t have insurance coverages if you travel outside the country.

Not suffering from any pre-existing health problems, will help save money. In case you do, make sure you know what restrictions will be included by different travel insurance plans before buying. There are ways to handle pre-existing conditions however it can cost you extra. Once we grow older our insurance coverage is going to cost us more as a result if you need over 65 travel insurance or maybe over 70 travel insurance coverage remember it?s available, it?ll merely cost a little more.

Depending on your situation, there are plenty of things which can come up and get in the way of holiday vacation travel. Your work may up and transfer you out of town. For those who have other close relatives particularly elderly parents or others who you care for, a variety of emergency situations can come along which may force you to have to cancel a holiday ? perhaps on short notice. If this sounds like your situation you?ll certainly need to make sure you have got ?cancel for any reason? coverage in your travel insurance.

To find the best bargains, read the small print. If you?re searching online, reputable providers are going to have most of the specific policy coverages along with exclusions available for you to compare. Ask a travel specialist. Ask friends who?ve traveled lately. Remember to check with your personal insurance agent regarding travel insurance. They may have good suggestions based upon what they know around you and your existing insurance coverages. Spending a little time searching for the bargains will turn them up. Then again, inexpensive travel insurance sometimes is not what we really want or need.

Solar storm seen from inside and outside Earth's magnetosphere

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? For the first time, instrumentation aboard two NASA missions operating from complementary vantage points watched as a powerful solar storm spewed a two million-mile-per-hour stream of charged particles and interacted with the invisible magnetic field surrounding Earth, according to a paper published March 28 in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

The spacecraft, NASA's Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers (TWINS) and Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), observed the impact from inside and outside Earth's magnetosphere, respectively. The energetic neutral atom (ENA) cameras aboard each spacecraft enabled global imaging of the magnetosphere, the invisible bubble that protects Earth from the majority of charged particles from the Sun, as it compressed in response to sharply faster solar wind.

The storm, observed April 5, 2010, also is thought to have caused an important communications satellite, Galaxy-15, to founder and drift, taking almost a year to return to its station.

"Many satellites above Earth are in geosynchronous orbit. Like heavy traffic on a Los Angeles freeway, they have to stay in their lanes because they could, theoretically, collide," says Dr. David McComas, assistant vice president of the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute, and principal investigator of the IBEX and TWINS missions. "More likely, however, is that they will get too close together and their radio frequencies will interfere with the operation of nearby satellites, which could hamper activities on Earth."

The IBEX images (taken from a distance of around 180,000 miles) show an immediate compression of the magnetosphere as it was impacted by charged particles from the solar wind. ENA global imaging enabled the team to determine the precise timing of the compression, to within ?9 seconds. Minutes later, one of the TWINS spacecraft, carrying identical ENA sensors that provide stereoscopic imaging, observed changes in the inner magnetosphere (from a much-closer 28,000 miles). A magnetospheric structure called the "ring current" traps charged particles that gyrate around magnetic field lines. About 15 minutes after impact, the trapped particles propagated down the field lines toward the poles and into Earth's atmosphere, where they produced additional ENAs. The brief time delay in losing particles to the atmosphere suggests that internal magnetospheric processes take some time after compression from the initial impact.

"This imaging gives us a better global picture of the evolution of the magnetosphere -- especially of the processes by which the Sun injects energy into the magnetosphere -- than has ever been available before," says McComas. "It's a cool combination of two data sets that opens the door to much more sophisticated global studies."

To produce the new images, the team also developed a series of techniques to process the imaging data, including improved procedures for binning, differential background subtraction and "statistical smoothing" of images.

"Understanding how solar events develop and impact satellites is like understanding the processes that cause extreme weather events on Earth to develop and destroy homes and businesses," says McComas. "Engineers use weather data to know where and how they need to strengthen buildings against various types of weather threats. The more we know about the processes occurring in space, the better engineers can design satellites to protect them from space weather hazards, which is increasingly important in our highly technological world."

sales outsourcing, telemarketing script,lead generation

?

?

Every company is endlessly looking for strategies and techniques in order to achieve their goals. Indeed sales outsourcing is a valuable means of facilitating companies to accomplish the triumph they dreamed of. Digging deeper, what strategy does this outsourcing method acquire to do all this work? One tactic is through the telemarketing script. These scripts are the ones being used by the agents, individuals or company belonging to outsourcing group. Telemarketing scripts are very important factors that influence the outcome of the sales production. These lines are the ones heard and listened to by customers so it must be very catchy, influential, nevertheless, awfully clear and straight to the point. Good to know that telemarketing scripts provide formula that works well in drawing positive leads to appointments, and then to sales. With the assistance of a telemarketing script a telemarketer will always know what to say, no dead airs whatsoever. Besides, since the work is over the phone, the copy of the script can be placed in front of the telemarketer. Take note, even a new telemarketer can confidently call or answer a customer on the phone and prospect clients adding more to the increasing pipelines of a particular company.

?

These are just some of the most vital things that a company must consider when deciding what to do to make a business progress. Supports for patients living with leukemia and lymphoma is the topic of the next Cancer Answers public lecture.

The Cancer Care Nova Scotia event will be held Tuesday, April 3, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the Royal Bank Lecture Theatre of the Halifax Infirmary, 1796 Summer St., Halifax. It will also be available by video conference at 17 sites across the province.

The lecture series is designed to provide Nova Scotians with quality cancer information. The lecture will be presented by Tanya Hastings, patient services manager, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

"A diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma or myelodysplastic syndrome is difficult for patients and their families," said Ms Hastings. "Through funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada is working to ease the journey for patients who are living with these cancers.

"During this lecture, I will talk about the support services available through our society and how patients, families and health professionals can access them."

Cancer Care Nova Scotia, a program of the Department of Health and Wellness, was created in 1998 to facilitate quality cancer prevention and care for Nova Scotians. It supports health professionals in providing patients with high quality care.

Its work with other organizations and its screening programs raise awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles to reduce cancer risk, and educate Nova Scotians about available testing such as Pap tests for cervical cancer and Home Screening Kits for colon cancer. The goal is to find cancer earlier and treat it better.

Elder Care Pittsburgh | Cancer Home Detection Kit

by Reed on March 26, 2012

Question: Cancer is prevalent in our family and I live in fear both for my 75-year-old mother as well as myself.? My father died recently of cancer and my mother has been struggling with depression and her own fears about getting breast cancer, the disease that killed her mother.? Is there any new research out on cancer detection?

Coincidentally,? a University of Missouri researcher is developing a tiny sensor, known as an acoustic resonant sensor, which is smaller than a human hair and could test bodily fluids for a variety of diseases, including breast and prostate cancers.

?Our ultimate goal is to produce a device that will simply and quickly diagnose multiple specific diseases, and eventually be used to create ?point of care? systems, which are services provided to patients at their bedsides,? said Researcher Jae Kwon.? ?The sensor has strong commercial potential to be manifested as simple home kits for easy, rapid and accurate diagnosis of various diseases, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.?

This could mean good news on the horizon for your family.

?Healthy personal habits can reduce the risk of cancer,? wrote President Barack Obama in last year?s monthly proclamation.? ?Smoking accounts for thousands of cancer deaths every year, and quitting ? even after many years ? can greatly reduce the risk of cancer.

?Physical inactivity and obesity may cause a substantial proportion of colon, breast, endometrial, kidney and esophageal cancers in the United States, so maintaining physical activity and a healthy diet can help prevent cancer, among other diseases.? Finally, moderating alcohol intake and sun exposure can help protect Americans.?

Attitude can play an important role as well in staying healthy.? Perhaps your mother is in need of companionship since the passing of your father.

What's keeping vets from getting work

Rachel Mummey / for msnbc.com

Tyson Akers was turned down for a security job with the Iowa National Guard in the midst of a 13-month job search. The veteran juggles going to school full time at Iowa State University while raising two young sons with his wife, Amanda.

By Allison Linn

Tyson Akers joined the Marines straight out of high school and spent more than eight years in the infantry, including four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When he left the military in February 2011 because he wanted more time at home with his young children, he knew any civilian job would be different than what he?d done in the Marines.

?Your job was to go out and be on the front line and pray to God nothing happened to you,? he said. ?It?s hard to translate that over to the civilian world.?

But Akers, 29, didn?t count on a job search that has lasted more than a year, leaving him demoralized and even questioning his decision to leave the Marines.

?You start thinking to yourself if it?s even possible to get a job once you?re out,? he said.

While older veterans generally have a relatively low jobless rate, the unemployment rate for veterans who have served in the post-9/11 era averaged more than 12 percent last year, compared with under 9 percent for the general population, according to government data out last week.?

The problem of veteran unemployment is widely recognized. President Barack Obama has referred to it frequently and just last month pledged to get more veterans back to work.

"They've already risked their lives defending America,? he said. ?They should have the opportunity to rebuild America."

With the U.S. making plans to withdraw from Afghanistan and possibly shrink the military, thousands more young veterans like Akers are likely to be looking for work in the coming months and years.

Yet there are plenty of roadblocks preventing veterans from getting civilian jobs, including a lack of job-seeking skills and a mismatch between military experience and civilian requirements.

?Hard to translate?
Younger veterans especially may lack the experience crafting a resume or handling a job interview. And after emerging from years in the jargon-filled military culture, they may have a hard time explaining how their military experience would benefit a civilian employer.

?They have a difficult time translating their military cultural language into civilian cultural language,? said Randy Plunkett, director of community and government outreach for military.com, a website aimed at the military community. ?They undersell themselves. They don?t see and have a good handle on how to self-promote (and) how to articulate the skills they bring to the table.?

Akers, who lives in State Center, Iowa, thought that it wouldn?t be too hard to get a job as a security guard while he attended Iowa State University full time with support from the GI Bill.

Instead, over the past 13 months he?s endured rejection after rejection as employers told him that they had more qualified candidates. His wife, Amanda, said one prospective employer even told him his deployments didn?t count as security experience.

Recently, he got a break: A job interview with another former Marine at a security company run by other veterans.

He found out this week that he had gotten a security position, starting at 20 hours a week and paying $9.50 an hour.?Although he had hoped to secure a supervisor position, at least it's a start.

Even companies that actively seek out veterans say it can be tough to get them hired.

Jim Barr, vice president of government relations with Ryder, said the trucking company has made a point of trying to hire veterans who drove or worked on trucks in the military. But to drive for Ryder, veterans need a civilian commercial driving license, and requirements vary by state.

Some require hundreds of hours of training, and military experience may not count. In other cases, Barr said, the veterans may be able to waive the training but have trouble getting a truck for the test.

?They sound like kind of minor barriers, but if you don?t have the truck to take the test with, you can?t take the test,? Barr said.

States including Washington, Utah, Colorado and Texas have been working to remove some of the licensing barriers.

Eddie Crosby, 36, served in the military from 1996 to 2000 and then re-enlisted from 2004 until 2010. He worked as a military truck mechanic and driver and trained for dealing with chemical spills. He has been surprised he has been unable to translate his experience into a civilian job.

He used the GI Bill to go to civilian truck driving school. But even after he got his commercial license, he said many companies were looking for someone with more experience on the road.

To save money, he moved to Hermiston, Ore., where he?s living with his fianc? in a 26-foot camp trailer on his family?s property. He is about to start a part-time, minimum-wage job at a potato chip factory.

?I loved my military service, I really did,? Crosby said.

But it?s hard to find himself, at age 36, scrounging for entry-level jobs.

?Everybody that I graduated high school with, they?re 10 years on a job, and here I am struggling to pump gas, you know?? he said.

Slipping through the cracks
Experts are seeing some of the biggest disconnects for veterans with medical experience and training.

One issue is that a military medic may end up doing advanced work that may not translate directly to a credential in civilian life, said Steve Gonzalez, assistant director of the American Legion Economic Division. It can then be tough to figure out how to apply that experience toward a civilian medical license or credential.

There also are legitimate differences between medical work you do in the military and in civilian life, said veteran Ben Chlapek, deputy chief at the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District in Missouri. A medic who served in combat may not have experience with common civilian issues such as drug abuse, domestic abuse and pediatric patients.

Follow the story of Staff Sgt. Charles Weaver over the past ten years, from 2002 when he had been a soldier of Operation Iraqi Freedom to today - having returned back home to the United States, but now fighting to be a productive and employed individual.? NBC News' Tom Brokaw reports 'Hiring our Heroes' on Sunday, March 25th, at 7pm/6c.?

?Soldiers rarely deliver babies,? Chlapek said.

He said some potentially good candidates slip through the cracks when they realize they can?t get a job right away, or one that pays as well as their military job did.

?A lot of times they?ll call us or come in, and then they?ll disappear,? he said.

Even when the skills transfer directly, it can be tough to juggle military and civilian careers.

Todd Fredricks, 46, of Athens, Ohio, always dreamed of having his own rural medical practice, but he also wanted to serve in the military. As an Army flight surgeon in the reserves, he deployed to the Balkans once and to Iraq three times, most recently in 2011.

The transitions made it impossible to keep up a medical practice, and he now works full-time in a hospital in West Virginia.

?I practice the medicine that I do now because it?s the easiest way I can enter and leave service,? he said.

Peter Leon, an administrative nursing supervisor with Panorama City Medical Center in California, also considers himself lucky: As an RN, he was able to easily transition back and forth between his job stateside and his military deployments as a reservist.

Leon, 44, last deployed to Iraq in 2008, and now that he has a young daughter he no longer volunteers to go overseas. But he misses his military duty.

?I wish I could go back and deploy again,? he said. ?I feel more useful out there than I do here.?

There are other success stories. J.P. Morgan, 36, served in the military as an aircraft electrician from 1994 to 1998.

In 2004, he rejoined the military as a reservist, partly because he would get additional training he could never afford as a civilian. That has allowed him to get the certification he needed to become an aircraft maintenance technician for Southwest Airlines.

Morgan, who lives in Dallas, left the reserves in 2010.

?The military ? it was wonderful to me in that respect,? he said.

(This story has been updated from an earlier version to reflect new information that Tyson Akers has landed a job.)

Glass iPhone 5? Apple patent application shows the fragile future of smartphones

Yes, yes, we only reported on an Apple patent application a few hours ago, but interesting stuff is interesting stuff. While this morning?s news focused on Apple?s future attempts to get into and control your living room, this is an altogether more feasible idea: an iPhone case made entirely out of glass.

The patent application points to portable devices hewn from glass right the way round. That?s not to say that Apple want you to see the device?s innards, of course: think more along the lines of the current iPhone, only without the steel frame around the middle.

The patent application describes how the iPhone of 2013 could be built from a ?hollow glass tube? that then gets stuffed with tech, or by combining two half tubes together. The question is: why?

iPhone 5 jumping up to 4.6-inches?

Apple cites two main benefits to having an entirely glass iPhone. The first is that glass is better for conducting a wireless signal, and the second is that it?s more watertight. The patent application reads: ?The seamless enclosure, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing, can provide the added benefit of less contamination and moisture intrusion.?

We?re wary. These benefits won?t amount to much if the device they?re helping can?t survive a fall: the iPhone 4 and 4S are coated in glass on its front and back, and we know plenty of people with cracked devices caused by even the slightest of falls.

Romantis Group expands cooperation agreement with Russian ...

The Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) and Romantis Group have announced that they will further develop the existing collaboration based on RSCC satellite capacity and Romantis VSAT products and value-added services to spread to North and South America as well as the transatlantic area. The agreement was reached during a series of meetings at the Cabsat 2012 exhibition in Dubai and the Satellite 2012 trade show in Washington D.C.

?We are expanding our current commercial relationship with Romantis to also include the prospective Express-AM8 satellite capacity,? said RSCC Director General Yuri Prokhorov. ?We always look for innovative channels to make our capacity offerings stand out from the competition. Romantis effectively promotes and sells RSCC satellite capacity as a significant component of its turn-key solutions in the EMEA and now will also market the Express-AM8 capacity as a strategic RSCC partner in the American region.?

Romantis satellite bandwidth management services are enriched by the customer-centric service model that includes network planning, link budgeting, optimization of capacity utilization, online monitoring and troubleshooting systems as well as web-based booking tools for planning occasional-use transmissions. Romantis also developed customized packages combining the advanced IP-based UHP VSAT platform that complements powerful capacity on RSCC satellites designed both for DTV and VSAT applications. The packages include proven turn-key solutions for corporate networks, broadband access, SCADA and GSM backhaul.

?RSCC is one of the leading satellite operators and we are excited to be intensifying our relationship with them to add new premium capacity to our existing portfolio of competitive solutions already offered in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa via Express-AM44 from 11 degrees West,? stated Dr. Harald W. Stange, Managing Director of Romantis GmbH, the European headquarters of the Romantis Group.

?In 2011 Romantis expanded its operations in the Americas and Asia, establishing its offices in Canada. We have had an overwhelming response from the leading telecom carriers, TV broadcasters and enterprise customers across North America, Latin America and South-East Asia for our bundled capacity and VSAT hardware packages and expect to increase our presence in the region with the help of Express-AM8 and the other RSCC satellites,? commented Vagan Shakhgildian, President and CEO of Romantis, Inc.

The powerful Express-AM8 satellite is scheduled to be launched to 14 degrees West in the third quarter of 2013. The satellite will be equipped with six high-power Ku-band and two C-band spot beams providing superior coverage of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North and South America. Express-AM8 is designed for high-quality video, voice and data services in both local and transatlantic networks.

Romantis UHP (Universal Hardware Platform) is industry?s first 100% software-definable networking product which supports VSAT networks of any size and topology such as TDM/TDMA Star and Mesh and Hub-less TDMA, MCPC/SCPC, and controlled (on demand) SCPC. The super-compact terminal UHP-1000 uses DVB-S2 signaling and is capable of processing data streams with throughput of up to 86 Mbps and routing IP packets at the rate of 28,000 packets per second.
