Is online poker really 'gaming?'

There is plenty of debate about the definition of gaming, particularly with the introduction of gamification.? Gamification is where typically non-gaming applications use simplistic game mechanisms to engage users or fans of a particular product for a longer period of time than usual.? Similar to Albertson?s Sizzlin? Summer Giveaway, where customers receive game pieces with their purchase and by buying certain items they receive bonus tickets.? Grocery shopping is hardly considered gaming, but like the old stamp programs, Albertson?s has found an interactive way to influence shopping patterns.

Poker and online poker sites are arguably more of a traditional game type.? In the past, players had to seek out a family or neighborhood game.? Now of course, almost anything, anyone could want is found online.? This too applies to gambling which is mostly illegal in the United States.? Though there are compulsive gamblers which have destructive behavior, there are other types of compulsive gamers that are having similar destructive behaviors.? Without trying to open a legal or moral justification of that argument, coolers heads might find see the similarities.

Though hardly thought of when the topic of gaming is brought, the mechanics are often duplicated in other game genres.? The random draws have been used in role playing games since before its translation to digital.? The dice rolls for success and failure have been used since the inception of Dungeons and Dragons and continues behind the scenes in many RPGs.? Some games even use the exact card mechanic as mini-games in a larger scale game to break up the standard gameplay.

For the purpose of bettering entertainment, online gaming should probably be included in more of the conversation about gaming in general.? It will likely elevate the expectations and quality of gaming as a whole.? Without waxing too libertarian, I doubt we need as many laws as we have to protect us from ourselves.? Is online gambling really worse than having six World of Warcraft accounts and neglecting your responsibilities?? Though not as widespread, shirking responsibility or checking out in any capacity for a long enough period of time can result in the same misfortunes.
