Mayor Weisner Welcomes Consul General of Mexico to Aurora
(Aurora) - Today, Mayor Tom Weisner welcomed Carlos Jimenez Macias, the new Consul General of Mexico, to Aurora. Joined by members of the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, they discussed their shared commitment to building stronger connections between Aurora and the Mexican Consulate, and the need for expanded educational opportunities for youth.
?Our history is one where immigrants were integral in building and shaping the City of Aurora. I am proud that Aurora is home to immigrants of many countries and their descendants. Aurora?s Mexican population has been rooted in Aurora for almost a century and has become a staple part of our diverse community. I look forward to working with the Consul General to forge new collaborations for our community,? said Mayor Weisner.
?I am happy to be here with you because we know how much you support our community. The government of Mexico knows your support, and we thank you for it. It is very important that we are aligned with officials in Aurora,? said Consul General Carlos Jimenez Macias.
Persons of Latino descent comprise over 41% of Aurora?s population and Aurora has a large population of individuals of Mexican descent.
The City of Aurora has a firm partnership with the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (AHCC) that represents the collective of Hispanic-owned businesses in Aurora and the Hispanic Pioneers Committee that honors the achievements of Aurora?s Hispanic Pioneers in many fields of human endeavors.? During Mayor Weisner?s first term in office, he instituted the City of Aurora?s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board (AHHAB) to strengthen the cultural connections of Aurora?s Hispanic residents and the entire city.?
The City?s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Hispanic Pioneers Committee have provided advocacy, awareness, and activities that have had a positive impact on Aurora?s Latino community and have brought together tens of thousands of Aurora residents for such community events as Dia de Los Ninos, the Hispanic Pioneers Breakfast, and Fiestas Patrias.?
?Thank you for hosting Fiestas Patrias. This is a very important day for us. This year will mark the first time that the Mexican Consulate of Chicago will join you to celebrate the Mexican community,? the Consul General said of the community event that will be held on September 14-15 at RiverEdge Park in Aurora.
The same sentiments of support were echoed from other community leaders during the meeting.
?There are a lot of exciting things happening in Aurora thanks to Mayor Weisner,? said Peter Aguilera, Vice President of Marketing for the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Yesterday, Mayor Weisner met with Senator Dick Durbin, Congressman Bill Foster, and local community leaders to discuss immigration reform and its impact on Aurora and the nation.
?Aurora remains committed to improving the quality of life of all of our residents. The visit of Consul General Carlos Jimenez Macias supports those efforts and affirms that we are headed in the right direction,? said Mayor Weisner.
