Grapeland Chamber Gears Up for 67th Annual Peanut Festival ...

The Grapeland Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their 67thAnnual Peanut Festival and Queen?s Coronation, with the theme ?History and Heritage,? on Saturday, October 20, 2011.

Prior to the festival, the Carnival will host a ?Family Night? event on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Grapeland City Park from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with ?ride-all-night arm bands.? The price of the arm bands has yet to be announced. .

On Friday, the community will gear up for Homecoming with a Homecoming Pep Rally in the Grapeland High School Gym. A time for this event has not yet been announced.

The Grapeland Sandies will battle the Cushing Bearkats during their Homecoming Game at Sandie Stadium, with kick-off at 7:30 p.m. and the naming the Homecoming Queen during half-time.

For those who aren?t interested in the Homecoming Game, the carnival will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This year, the Chamber has announced that they will NOT be hosting a Streetdance on Main Street following the Homecoming Game.

Saturday?s festivities will begin with a 5K Run, to benefit the Grapeland High School Athletic Boosters, in Salmon Lake Park at 8 a.m.

The annual Peanut Festival Parade down Main Street will begin at 10 a.m. and then everyone will move over to the city park to enjoy the festival. This year there is an age limit of 12 or older for all motorcycles and ATVs.??No ATVs that are not promoting a business will be allowed. There will be a $5 entry fee to all applicants except for bands and floats or acceptable commercial entries in the parade.

Festival-goers will enjoy live music, arts and crafts, festival foods, carnival rides and the midway from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The finale to the weekend will be the annual Queen?s Coronation at 7 p.m. in the Lorena Shoultz Auditorium that will end with one lucky contestant being named as the 67th?Annual Peanut Queen. This year?s Queen Contestants will be Julie Riess, sponsored by the Grapeland Noon Lions Club, Kaylie Walker, sponsored by George Bartee Construction, Paige Scott, sponsored by Winfield Nursing Center, Riley Benthul, sponsored by Elite Fitness and Eden Owens, sponsored by Frontier Camp. Tickets for the coronation will be sold at Walling?s Pharmacy on Main Street in Grapeland. Walling?s is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person.

According to Arts and Crafts Vendor Chair Jim Thorpe there are still spaces available for rental in the park for the festival. Interested vendors can obtain more information or register at www.peanutfest.com.
