Book Review: Hounded by Kevin Hearne | DangerousRomance.com

Hounded-The Iron Druid Chronicles

by

Kevin Hearne

The first novel in an original, back-to-back three-book series The Iron Druid Chronicles?introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

?

Atticus O?Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old?when in actuality, he?s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

?

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he?s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power?plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish?to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

???????????????????????????????-

Sometimes it is really nice to read a fantasy written from a male perspective. There are some wonderful series out there where the MC is male; Jim Butcher?s Dresden Files, Simon Green?s Nightside series, Rob Thurman?s Cal Leandros books (and yes, I know Rob is a woman).

?

Sometimes, a series is like a relationship. It was so much fun in the beginning, there was a joy to the wild crazy world building and interactions as the players all got to know each other or as we began to know the players. However, all relationships over time change, and the books, and the characters need to change??as well.?Obviously, if a character doesn?t grow and change over a series of books, if they are NOT affected by just horrific things they are subjected to by their creator, they? would become stagnant.

However, by the same token, sometimes the books become so dark, grim, and morose we lose a little of the joy we had when we first started reading the series. It doesn?t mean we don?t enjoy the author anymore,? or the character?we do. We?re loyal fans, just?.we miss things the way they used to be, when every thing was fun and new.

I picked up HOUNDED, within minutes settled in and went??Yeah?now we are talking.? It was as if Hearne took the things we loved about so many of our favorite series, and then lightened everything back up. Who knows, maybe after 22 books (we should be so lucky), we?ll all be worn out along with Atticus but as of now, he is a laid back hottie, who has a goddess or two in his pocket and after his bod, a stolen magical sword strapped to his back, and a telepathic dog who has a thing for French Poodles. It was smartly written, fun, and a delight, and it was kinda like falling in love again, with a brand new character. Count me in, I?m a new fan.

Aenghus ?g, a Celtic God,?has decided to finally go after his sword in person. He?s been sending people to do his dirty work and steal his sword back, for?centuries?due to Atticus having stolen a magical sword he wanted. We never really get the solid backstory on the whole thing but it works. Evidently Aenghus is a God of Love, but he is such a jerk, you are glad the magical sword is with the good guy, Atticus. This God has been hounding him for hundreds of years and it looks like this time, he isn?t going to stop until one of them is dead. Aenghus ?g isn?t afraid to use the local police, Witches, and a?call in favors with other dieties?to try to take Atticus down.

Atticus may look too young to own his own store, (he looks like a 21 year old slacker), but he is over 2100 years old, and he didn?t live that long by? doing anything stupid, like picking fights with gods, but sometimes when the fight is brought to you, you gotta make a stand and utilize what resources you have. He has a telepathic dog named Oberon who is his best friend, a team of lawyers, one is a Werewolf and one is a Vampire?but that doesn?t stop them from charging him $300.00 a billable hour. However, watching them in action?they?re worth every penny.

Atticus is also friends with a?little old Irish lady who likes to have a wee dram with him on the porch after he finishes burying the odd body or two in her back yard, which she is perfectly fine with as long as they are English. He has a deal with The Morrigan, a Goddess of Death who shows up either as a crow or a gorgeous naked lady, and a Coven of Polish Witches that may or may not be on his side.?Also, there is a hot bartender who is more then she seems, then there is Brigid, and Flidais, and?.seriously?just read the book. There?are so many mythological characters coming and going out of his little store?it is impossible to keep track.

I loved how Hearne weaves history and myth through the book, with Atticus having to make deals left and right if he wants to come out of this alive. It was great to read a new, strong, Urban Fantasy debut featuring a male protaganist who was smart and funny instead of just snarky and a smart ass. Atticus isn?t out to save the world so much as he is out to save his ass, and if he has to do the right thing along the way, he will. It was really fun to have the magic AND the fun together again. I can?t WAIT for the next book.

?

PS. Super props to the Art Department on this series, the cover model looks exactly like I imagined the character too.
